Fire Security is an important component of security in this contemporary era.Workplaces in Kenya have advanced and become more dynamic in terms of the physical outlook and communication modules. However, with this dynamic change, modern problems and risks have now become the Achilles heel to business survival and continuity.
Risk of fires in workplaces have become commonplace and it is nolonger news to hear of fire breakouts in business environments. With this knowledge,it is imperative that every employee, staff or member of any business or institution be aware of the best ways to mitigate fires and maximise on the resources available.
For starters, every business environment or institution should designate fire assembly points that provide an open space which would enable fluid accountability of the institution's population and help contain the situation.Fire assembly points need to be placed in areas far away from buildings, they should be marked clearly for easy visibility and should be regularly assessed to ensure full functionality.
Fire security education for the individual's in the business environment or institution is mandatory for empowerment and preparedness. This curriculum should be brief and to the point and should include all the necessary key points. For starters, learning how to operate a fire extinguisher can authenticate the thin line between disaster and safety. To operate a fire extinguisher, one has to locate the pin holding the nozzle, disarm it by pulling it out,aim the nozzle at the base of the fire and press down the nozzle as you sway it from left to right to fully extinguish the fire.
Any competent organisation should also come up with foolproof fire security policies that put into perspective the opinions, literacy, effectiveness and comfortability of it's employees. This is to ensure that everyone gets to learn more about fire safety, understand the policies and be in a position to effect these policies.
Installation of smoke detectors and heat detectors linked to an alarm system is important. This allows for an early warning system that is able to alert everyone in a premise to exit the premise in time.Installations of this sort are readily available in the Kenyan market and having such a system may prove useful in the end.
Every business premise should contain emergency exit doors that provide an alternative route out of the scene. It is the same thing to do so as to avoid casualties.
A fire audit has to be conducted regularly in every business premise. This should be done annually depending on your business budget,a fire audit allows for early detection of loopholes and ways on how to fix them.
Always remember that security begins with you and prevention is better than cure.
