In the middle of a very busy season, I had the chance to pause—and do something I genuinely love: teach.
Last week, we spent time with grantees from the OCEAN Grants Programme, facilitating a session on fundraising.
Together, we explored the full fundraising journey—developing fundraising strategies, mapping and cultivating donors, strengthening proposal development, thinking intentionally about donor stewardship, and unpacking pathways for funding diversification.
What stood out for me was the quality of engagement in the room.
The questions were thoughtful, the discussions honest, and the commitment to strengthening locally led organisations was clear.
These are organisations deeply rooted in their communities, doing critical work to protect ocean and coastal ecosystems—and taking real ownership of their sustainability.
This experience was also a strong reminder of how important it is for donors and grantmakers to invest beyond the fund transfer.
When funders create space for learning, reflection, and capacity strengthening, they don’t just support projects—they strengthen organisations for the long term.
Teaching in spaces like this is grounding.
It creates room to reflect, exchange ideas, and learn alongside practitioners who are navigating real-world constraints with creativity and resilience.
Grateful to the Ocean Community Empowerment and Nature (OCEAN)
for modelling this kind of partnership and for investing in grantees beyond funding.
