Thinking of starting a small-scale agribusiness? Tip: Study the market and choose a niche product that will give good returns. Here are some of the most lucrative agribusiness ideas:

1. Fish Farming: In Kenya, people love to eat fish year-round. All you need to start off is a constant supply of water for the ponds and fish feeds. Some good fish to farm are Tilapia, Catfish, and Nile perch.
2. Mushrooms Farming: Mushrooms (organic mushrooms) have high demand, especially in high-end restaurants and domestic households. Mushrooms take a period of fewer than two months to mature and be ready for the market. With a capital of just Kshs. 50,000 you are good to start off.
3. Raising Pigs: Pigs are known for their rapid reproduction and growth. Selecting the right pig breeds can lead to substantial profits in a relatively short timeframe.
4. Avocado Farming: Avocado farming is a common practice in Kenya, with local varieties of avocado dominating the markets. The Hass avocado variety is in high demand in the European market. One advantage of the Hass avocado is that it only takes about three years to fully mature.
5. Growing Garlic: Garlic is a high-value horticultural crop. The average garlic crop reaches maturity in approximately six months. Successful garlic cultivation needs training, certified seeds, fertile soil, and an optimal environment. For export markets organic garlic is preferred.

Traceability isn't just for big players! Traceability is crucial for food safety, by tracking the journey of our food from source to plate, we can ensure the safety and excellence of what we consume.

Here's how you can implement traceability even in a small farm:

1️⃣ Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of your farming practices, including inputs, cultivation methods, and harvest dates. This data forms the foundation for traceability.

2️⃣ Batch/Tag Identification: Assign unique identifiers to each batch of produce or use labeling/tags to track their origin and journey through the supply chain.

3️⃣ Farm-to-Fork Documentation: Document the movement of your produce from the farm to distribution points, capturing key information like transportation details and storage conditions.

4️⃣ Collaboration: Collaborate with local farmers' associations, cooperatives, or industry organizations to share best practices and collectively implement traceability initiatives.

5️⃣ Technology Adoption: Leverage affordable technologies like barcode systems, mobile apps, or cloud-based platforms to streamline traceability processes and data management.

Let's empower all farmers to embrace traceability and strengthen the integrity of their produce! Share this post to spread awareness and support the vital role of small-scale farming in our food system.
