Rigathi Gachagua is a Kenyan politician who currently serves as the Deputy President of Kenya under President William Ruto. Before joining elective politics, he worked in the Kenyan civil service during the administration of Daniel arap Moi, serving as a District Officer in several parts of the country. In the early 2000s, he also worked as the personal assistant to then Minister for Local Government Uhuru Kenyatta, which helped him build connections in national politics.
Gachagua officially entered elective politics in 2017 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency in Nyeri County. During his tenure in Parliament, he emerged as a strong political ally of William Ruto and became a vocal supporter of the “Hustler” political movement. His political influence grew rapidly in the Mount Kenya region, where he positioned himself as a key defender of the region’s interests.
In the 2022 Kenyan general election, Gachagua was selected as the running mate of William Ruto under the United Democratic Alliance ticket. The pair won the election against the Azimio coalition led by Raila Odinga and Martha Karua. Following their victory, Gachagua was sworn in as the Deputy President of Kenya on 13 September 2022, becoming one of the most influential political figures in the country.
