Let me share with you the Christian Dress code.
We have different Cultures in the world today. Every culture has a dressing preference due to their climatic conditions and religious consideration. And since Christianity cuts across geography and cultures; are there universal biblical principles that shape christian dressing? I want to share some of these principles.
First: the dressing should cover nakedness. Genesis 3:21. God himself made clothes for Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. Nakedness causes shame. Insane people and children alone do not have the capacity to feel shame. Fashion and culture does not justify being naked.
Second: the dressing should portray Glory and beauty.
Exodus 28:2,40. God commanded Moses to prepare garments for Aaron and the priests for glory and for beauty.
Since christians family . are "....a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you..." 1 Peter 2:9 so as christians who are a royal priesthood, our goal in dressing should be for glory and for beauty.
Three: The dress to distinguish between male and female. Deuteronomy 22:5 and 1 Corinthians 11:4,5.one should not be adorned with clothing that makes a female appear as a male or vice versa. It's undesirable before God for a woman to wear clothing that culture prescribes to be for men or vice versa. Every society has unique features for male and female clothing.
Four: Modesty
1 Timothy 2:9-10. Women are to dress modestly with sobriety and honor according to the standards of women who are godly. It is thus implied that modest dressing is a common sense issue and both christians and non christian can easily distinguish between modest dress from non modest dress.
Fifth: Adorning the inner person/ the heart.
1 Peter 3:3-4. Dressing should not target display of the external. The goal of dressing not to target showcasing the external in form of plaiting of hair, wearing golden jewelry but the adornment of the heart should be given priority.
Finally To understand the adornment question, we should study 1 Samuel 16:7
God sees the heart and man sees the outward. Clothing can camouflage. Christians should not fall prey to camouflage.
My Conclusions on the christian dress code: The bible does not provide a universal code of dressing, but the bible provides universal principles to guide christians on the choice of dressings.
James 2:2-5 whereas we should be careful with our quality of dressing, but we should not judge people by their dressing. We should not discriminate against people by virtue of their dressing.
