Today we celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene
Here's a thought I kept asking myself, how many are fortunate enough to go through their periods with dignity, how many have access to pads, what about access to the most basic...even water. This took me back to the day I had my first period..Lord was I scared. I had never really tried to understand what having periods meant, I remember at class two when the girls were having their mentorship class..we were all given pads and told we should take to ours mothers so that they would keep them for us . If you know me well you know am a daddy's girl. So what would I do..I run home innocently and handed it to my dad..being the father that he was he just took and promised to keep it safe for me. So on reporting back to school my friends laughed wondering how I would openly give it to my dad. That should tell you that men were never part of this discussion, so when I see the discussion on menstrual hygiene am excited, because for some of us our dad was more present that is his job allowed him to be more present at home than our mom. So back to the day I had my first period, I cried so much I remember it took me two days before I could tell ny mom what was happening....Nosw am happy that girls are getting this information everywhere..more and more mentorship and period talk is going on...So as we fight for period equality among our girls...since a girl in the remotest parts of Turkana and Lamu has to have the same access as the one in Nairobi..
