Mobile phones and driving

THINK! Advice

Switch off before you drive off

Even if you’re using a hands-free phone you should avoid making or answering calls when driving
All phone calls distract drivers' attention from the road.

Park safely before using your mobile phone
Do not park on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Don't call other people when they're driving
If you call someone and they tell you they are driving, ask them to call you back when they have parked up safely.

EL NINO Rains!Driving on wet roads can be a driver's worst nightmare.DON'T BE A STATISTIC

Each year, there are thousands of car accidents (some of them fatal) due to wet roads and poor driving conditions in the rain. Here are some practical tips to help you know how to recognize dangerous conditions and drive safely when the road gets wet.

-Slow Down-The best thing you can do to prevent an accident on a slick road is to slow down.
-Keep a Safe Distance from the Car in Front of You
It takes up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one, even if your tires are designed for wet weather and are of good quality.
-Know how to recover after skidding- If your car does skid, don’t panic and remember not to slam on the brakes. Steer in the direction of the skid. If you have an anti-lock braking system (ABS), apply firm, steady pressure to the brakes and steer the car in the direction of the skid.
-Drive in the track of the car in front of you-The tyre tracks left by the cars in front of you are areas of less standing water on the road, so if possible stay in these tracks to reduce the danger of aquaplaning.
-Don't Drive if You're Tired or Distracted
Driving in wet weather requires extreme alertness, particularly at night. If you're tired, find a safe place to pull over and take a rest. Avoid distractions such as eating, drinking, talking on the phone, fiddling with the radio, or handing items to children in the back seat, anything where you need to take one or both hands off the wheel.
Check tyre wear-Proper tread depth helps to prevent skids and aquaplaning, so check your tyre tread regularly.
