Women at the Margins of Peace Processes: Rethinking Conflict Resolution in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa (HoA) has experienced some of the worldโ€™s most protracted and devastating conflicts, particularly in Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea. These conflicts have caused mass displacement, economic collapse, humanitarian crises, and widespread destruction of social institutions. Despite women bearing a disproportionate burden of conflict, they continue to be systematically excluded from formal peace negotiations and high-level decision-making structures. Women remain central actors in informal peacebuilding initiatives, yet their contributions are often undervalued or ignored within official peace processes dominated by political elites and militarized actors.

As elections continue to shape Africaโ€™s democratic trajectory, concerns around election security, institutional credibility, misinformation, political violence and declining public trust remain critical across the continent.

Our latest Policy Brief, developed from our previous webinar โ€œElection Security in Africa: The Role of Institutional and Civic Mechanisms in SafeguardingDemocratic Stability,โ€ examines the structural and emerging threats facing electoral processes in Africa while advancing key policy recommendations for governments, electoral institutions, regional bodies and civil society actors.

The brief is a product of valuable insights from our distinguished speakers Ms Anne Kathurima and Dr. Kenndy Masome, moderated by Dr. Halkano Wario.

As Africa prepares for another critical electoral cycle, strengthening democratic legitimacy and electoral integrity remains more urgent than ever. Stay tuned for our webinar series on Election Security and Democracy.
