Women at the Margins of Peace Processes: Rethinking Conflict Resolution in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa (HoA) has experienced some of the world’s most protracted and devastating conflicts, particularly in Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea. These conflicts have caused mass displacement, economic collapse, humanitarian crises, and widespread destruction of social institutions. Despite women bearing a disproportionate burden of conflict, they continue to be systematically excluded from formal peace negotiations and high-level decision-making structures. Women remain central actors in informal peacebuilding initiatives, yet their contributions are often undervalued or ignored within official peace processes dominated by political elites and militarized actors.

Our latest Policy Brief, developed from our previous webinar “Election Security in Africa: The Role of Institutional and Civic Mechanisms in SafeguardingDemocratic Stability,” examines the structural and emerging threats facing electoral processes in Africa while advancing key policy recommendations for governments, electoral institutions, regional bodies and civil society actors.
