Most organisations heading into 2026 have a solid strategy.
Far fewer have the ex*****on system to deliver it.

AMI brought together senior leaders from across Nigeria's private sector for a frank, three-hour conversation about what it actually takes to move from strategy to results in this market. The room included leaders who have built and run real organisations, and the conversation matched that weight.

Three things that kept coming up:

→ Strategy is not the bottleneck. Ex*****on is. Leaders consistently identified the same failure mode: ambitious plans that stall in translation, misaligned priorities, blurred accountability, and decisions that slow down exactly when they need to speed up.

→ The hardest ex*****on challenges are human, not technical. Managing upward. Building cross-functional alignment. Sustaining team motivation when the environment is difficult. These are the real blockers, and most L&D investment doesn't touch them.

→ Context is not a variable to manage, it is the system. Infrastructure gaps. Regulatory shifts. Talent dynamics. Nigeria's leaders don't just adapt global frameworks, the best ones build something entirely fit for purpose.

AMI exists to build that capability, practical, measurable, and designed for how African businesses actually operate.

We'll be back in Lagos. Watch this space. 🇳🇬

The impact of MSME growth is rarely contained within a single business — it ripples outward across entire local economies.

When one entrepreneur grows, they don’t just create a stronger business. They create jobs, stabilise incomes, and support entire value chains.

AMI’s flagship programme shows what this looks like in practice:
• Entrepreneurs employ an average of 7 people
• They continue adding new jobs after programme completion
• Each direct job supports suppliers, distributors, and informal value chains

In total, one entrepreneur supports an estimated 246 livelihoods across direct and indirect pathways.

The multiplier effect is significant:
Every $1 invested in AMI MSME support generates a 9.85x return in employee income.

This is not just business growth — it is system-wide economic impact.

It demonstrates what becomes possible when MSME support is practical, evidence-backed, and designed for real-world application at scale.

“More rules” feels like control. But often, it’s the fastest way to kill ownership.
“Managers tick boxes and people become irritated, resentful, demotivated…”

In this piece, Jonathan Cook reflects on a difficult real-world case that exposes a deeper leadership problem: when systems take over, we stop seeing people.

Because here’s the tension:
Too few rules → chaos.
Too many rules → disengagement.
And somewhere in between is the real challenge of leadership.
So the question isn’t whether we need rules.
It’s whether our rules are replacing trust.

That raises some uncomfortable questions:
* Have you ever felt like you were working for a system, not a leader?
* What’s one rule that actually reduced your motivation at work?
* Can high performance exist without high trust?

The best teams aren’t over-managed.
They’re trusted, supported, and held accountable — in that order.

“The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay,” Henry Ford.

If your organisation is focused on performance, investing in your teams is the best place to start. Collaboration is not only a team dynamic but a leadership capability. It shows up in how leaders take accountability, communicate and give feedback.

Leaders who delegate with intention and remain open to feedback create environments where collaboration can thrive.

At AMI, we equip you with structured tools and practical training designed to meet your organisational needs.

What makes the African Management Institute different from traditional business training institutions?

We don’t believe business growth happens through theory alone.
And we don’t believe entrepreneurs need more information without application, support, and behaviour change.

Our approach to supporting enterprises is grounded in evidence — combining research on how people learn, what drives business performance, and what enables long-term change.

That’s why our programmes are built on three interconnected pillars:

🧠 How People Learn
We design learning experiences around how adults actually build and retain new skills — through practice, reflection, peer learning, repetition, and real-world application.

📈 Business Practices
We focus on practical management behaviours and tools proven to improve productivity, resilience, and business performance in African markets.

🔥 Owner Mindset
We recognise that growth also depends on persistence, adaptability, confidence, and the willingness to keep learning through challenges.

These pillars work together.
Better learning helps people apply stronger business practices. Stronger mindset helps them continue learning, adapting, and growing over time.

This evidence-based approach shapes everything we design — from programmes and coaching to tools, peer learning, and digital support — and is what makes AMI’s model distinctive.

We are excited to be recognised in the Financial Times Africa’s Fastest Growing Companies ranking for the third year in a row! 🥳

What makes this recognition particularly meaningful is not just the growth — it is the consistency. Sustained growth in a challenging and unpredictable business environment is never guaranteed, and this recognition reflects the resilience of the African enterprises at the heart of our work.

Across the continent, African business owners are proving something powerful: they are not waiting for perfect conditions to grow. Entrepreneurs and business leaders continue to find opportunities, adapt and build resilient companies despite the odds — and we are proud to support them on that journey.

We are also proud to see several AMI clients recognised in this year’s ranking, including Co-operative Bank of Kenya, M-KOPA Holding, Heirs Insurance Group, KCB Bank Group , Balloon Ventures among others. Congratulations to all the businesses recognised for driving growth across the continent.

Thank you to our team, partners, and the thousands of ambitious businesses we work with across the continent. Onward. https://bit.ly/48Wwkxd
