A heart throbbing…
An ‘online educator’ on his VAMPIRE DIARIES episodes, recently dismissed the importance of feasibility study in an engineering project. He said, “…our money has gone to the drain just like that. Wastage of public funds on a mere feasibility study…” This pained and irked my nerves.
A mental repose….
A FEASIBILITY STUDY is a crucial stage in engineering projects because it helps determine whether the project is viable and worth pursuing. Here are some key reasons why it's important:
1. Risk Assessment: A feasibility study identifies potential risks and challenges early on, allowing project planners to address them before significant resources are committed. The risks may involve a dam collapsing, poorly designed roads that create a black spot, and a building collapsing killing occupants.
2. Cost Estimation: It provides a detailed estimate of the costs involved, helping to ensure that the project is financially viable and within budget constraints. That is why in engineering projects we have BoQs that are based on market rates.
3. Technical Viability: The study evaluates whether the project can be technically achieved with the available resources, technology, and expertise. If not, then the project will not stand the test of nature.
4. Legal and Regulatory Compliance: It helps ensure that the project complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards, avoiding legal issues down the line. Otherwise, the project will be the source of dispute both in human-human and human-animal conflicts.
5. Resource Allocation: By understanding the resources required (time, money, manpower, materials), a feasibility study aids in proper planning and allocation, avoiding shortages or overuse of resources. Who wants to have white-elephant projects?
6. Decision-Making: The results of a feasibility study provide critical data that support informed decision-making by stakeholders, guiding whether to proceed, modify, or abandon the project.
7. Stakeholder Confidence: A thorough feasibility study builds confidence among stakeholders, investors, and decision-makers, showing that the project has been carefully analyzed and is likely to succeed.
8. Project Planning: It lays the groundwork for more detailed project planning by identifying key requirements, constraints, and objectives, leading to more effective and efficient project management.
Overall…
a feasibility study is essential for minimizing risks, ensuring proper resource use, and setting the foundation for successful project ex*****on.
NB/ I am not saying that corruption doesn’t exist in the ex*****on of these projects. I am underscoring that FEASIBILITY STUDY is mere. This is the most important part of any project.
