🌍 Innovating for a Greener Future 🌱

Enviroserve is thrilled to be part of a unique project that brings electric mobility to a surprising, yet vital, aspect of daily life in Kenya — the mkokoteni (hand cart)!

🚛 We received an urgent call from a partner to assist with powering a prototype hand cart equipped with an electric motor. In just one week, we designed, built, and baseline-tested the first battery! We’ve also supplied a second battery for swapping to help with retesting and issue resolution.

In Kenya, hand carts play a crucial role in transportation and logistics, yet they are rarely associated with e-mobility. This project is a testament to the innovation and creativity born out of the challenges and opportunities in Africa.

We're excited to contribute to this build and eager to see the initial results as the first electric mkokoteni nears completion. Stay tuned for updates as we continue testing!

We are thrilled to announce our latest success in sustainability and innovation in partnership with SunCulture Ke, A company providing off grid solar irrigation solutions for African farmers. Together, we have made significant strides in supporting African farmers through environmentally friendly technology.

🔋 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Our collaboration focuses on repurposing failed battery packs from SunCulture Ke, which are typically used in energy demanding work like water pumping, By meticulously testing and selecting viable cells, we've developed second-life battery packs that are now powering a range of crucial farming operations. These rebuilt packs are performing comparably to new ones.

🔄 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: This initiative not only extends the life of potential e-waste but also reduces the need for importing new battery packs, minimizing environmental impact, and fostering a circular economy.

💧 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The batteries used in these demanding environments show that repurposed cells can offer reliable, high-load solutions that are crucial for off-grid farming activities.

At Enviroserve Kenya, we are proud to spotlight the success of our ongoing partnership with WeTu, a remarkable organization dedicated to sustainable practices and community empowerment around Lake Victoria.

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻: Together, we are tackling environmental issues by supporting the phasing out of the use of disposable batteries and old pressure lamp models which used kerosene for lighting among the local fishing community. These items often pose significant pollution risks and CO2 emissions when discarded improperly.

𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲: Leveraging our expertise in battery repurposing, we have dismantled underperforming battery packs and rebuilt them using cells fit for a second life. These rejuvenated packs are now powering eco-friendly equipment, aiding fishermen in their nightly endeavors for Omena fishing.

𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸: The field trials have been a resounding success. According to local feedback, “the batteries have been performing very well in the lake, not a single fisherman has brought a negative report, and this is confirmed by the units being returned for charging not fully discharged.” This indicates both the reliability of the batteries and a reduced environmental footprint.

𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: This project exemplifies how collaboration and innovation can create impactful environmental solutions. We are excited to continue our work with WeTu, pushing forward with initiatives that not only benefit the environment but also enhance the livelihoods of local communities.

🚀 Expanding Our Impact: New Capabilities in Battery Testing and Reuse 🌱

Enviroserve Kenya is excited to share a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable energy solutions. After a fruitful proof of concept program, we have greatly expanded our capacity to test and repurpose battery cells from off-grid solar and e-mobility sources.

🔧 Enhanced Testing Capabilities: We've upgraded our facilities to include cell testers that can handle up to 512 cells simultaneously, up from 128. This scale-up allows for more extensive and efficient testing processes. Additionally, we've installed four new pack testers capable of assessing re-assembled packs ranging from 3 to 99 volts, with up to a 40 amp discharge capacity.

🤝 Supported by Siemens Stiftung and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH: This advancement has been made possible with the support of Siemens Stiftung and GIZ, as part of their dedicated project for R&D into E-Mobility in Kenya. We are thankful for their commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in energy use.

Innovating with Second-Life Battery Applications at Enviroserve Kenya 🌱⚡

We're excited to share an update from our ongoing research into sustainable energy solutions. At Enviroserve Kenya, we are continuously exploring ways to extend the life and utility of used battery cells.

🔋 Practical Innovation: In a recent initiative, we have successfully repurposed cells from off-grid solar systems for use in our warehouse forklift. Traditionally powered by lead acid batteries, which typically last about two years, our forklift now operates with a second-life battery pack.

🚀 Enhanced Performance: Initial results are promising! The repurposed battery pack not only delivers more power but also runs longer than the original lead acid batteries. This test is crucial as it allows us to evaluate the performance of second-life cells under intermittent use with high power demands.

📊 Monitoring and Progress: We are closely monitoring the performance of this second-life pack. This experiment will help us understand more about the potential applications and benefits of reusing battery cells, reducing waste, and enhancing operational efficiency.

🌍 Sustainable Commitment: This project is part of our broader commitment to sustainability and innovation in energy use. By finding new ways to reuse and recycle, we aim to minimize environmental impact and promote a circular economy.

Responsibility in the E-waste recycling process should never be a choice. Reports that unscrupulous recyclers burn what they cannot process and throw the remains into rivers and dumpsites should concern all.

It puts humans and wildlife at great risk as e-waste contain highly toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, copper, barium and chromium. These may accumulate in the environment, in the soil, air, water and in living things.

International recycling standards frown on these violations.

Did you know that there is no recycler in Africa with ability to deal with all kinds of e-waste. That is why takes on the responsibility to ship all the e-waste it cannot process in Nairobi to the SERA R2 V3 certified recycler based in the Middle East - Enviroserve our associated company in Dubai. They have advanced technology and systems to properly handle toxic e-waste.
