Why Proper Stack Sampling Location Matters

In stack emission monitoring, accurate results depend not only on the equipment used, but also on where the measurements are taken within the stack or duct.

Flow disturbances such as bends, dampers, fans, contractions, expansions, or junctions can create turbulence and uneven gas distribution. When this happens, the reliability of emission measurements may be compromised, affecting:

To obtain representative and compliant results, sampling ports should be located in a straight section of the stack with sufficient distance from disturbances to allow airflow stabilization before sampling.

According to the 2024 Kenya Air Quality Regulations and referenced stack sampling guidelines, the recommended minimum distances are:

🔹 Upstream Distance: Minimum 5D from the nearest disturbance
🔹 Downstream Distance: Minimum 2D from the nearest disturbance

(Where D = Internal stack/duct diameter)
