"But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”
David's nephew Abishai saved the King's life. As they pondered out how David had come very close to death, they told him not to participate with them in any more battles, an admonition the king seems to have taken to heart. Through his leadership David, as figurative lamp of Israel, provided Political, Military and Spiritual light to the Nation.
This kept me thinking why "hanging the boots" on is very important. It's good to be sensitive and know when to stop the active engagement in whatever field it is, as you age out to allow young and energetic men to continue with the work. Your wisdom is handy insead of dying unnecessary deaths...
