🌍 **Rethinking Plastic: A Smarter Way Forward**

What if the plastic bags we use every day could simply… disappear—without harming the environment?

That’s exactly what **Kevin Kumala**, a biologist-turned-entrepreneur, set out to solve. Through his company **Avani Eco**, he developed an alternative made from cassava root—yes, the same crop widely used across Africa.

These innovative bags dissolve in water and break down into organic material that is safe for marine life. In some demonstrations, they completely dissolve without leaving behind toxic residue or microplastics.

Pause and think about that.

A “plastic” bag that doesn’t linger in oceans for hundreds of years.
No pollution. No long-term damage. Just a material that returns safely to nature.

This raises an important question:
Why are we still so dependent on traditional plastics?

Sustainability isn’t only about reducing consumption.
Sometimes, it’s about **rethinking what we consume in the first place**.

Innovation like this challenges us especially in markets like Kenya to explore **locally viable, scalable alternatives** that align with circular economy principles.

♻️ The future may not just be about using less plastic.
It may be about using **smarter materials altogether**.

DESERTIFICATION

The factory has further switched to briquettes, a greener, cheaper fuel made of biomass by-products that would otherwise be treated as waste.

Anne Magenyi, Makomboki’s Production Assistant, said they used to use nearly 62,000 trees annually in their boilers sourced from Masinga in Machakos County.

The area under tea is 1,742 hectares with a total of 16,389,667 tea bushes.

“We process at least 25 million green leaf into tea and we need fuel (wood logs) for our boilers to heat the tea leaves,” she says.
“This was leading to desertification and the release of carbon in the atmosphere. However, from December 2014, we switched to briquettes.”
The factory makes the fuel from sawdust, rice husks, macadamia and cashew nut waste.

“This has saved us money and conserved trees that we would otherwise have chopped down.”
The factory used to spend Sh55 million on firewood annually, but the use of briquettes has cut the energy bill by almost half.

Makomboki Tea Factory sits on a hill in Murang’a South, surrounded by tens of trees and a vast tea plantation making the air feel lighter and fresher.

What Electrical Appliances Still Use Electricity When Turned Off

Any electrical device that has an external power supply connected to it will still use electricity while powered off. Such as cellphone chargers, computer speakers, any of those electrical devices with a cubed power supply on it. Also any electrical appliances that have a clock, LED, light, or LCD panel on it will also still use electricity while turned off. Such as microwaves, coffee makers, TVs, VCR’s, DVD players, etc. Also any devices that have a standby or sleep power modes will still consume electricity. Most TV’s and set top cable boxes never actually turn off, they just go into a standby mode. Computer monitors and computers are the same. Most computers will still keep power to the motherboard for different functions such as ethernet cards/network cards, modems, USB hubs, etc.
