You can point to a handful of people who shaped who you are today as a researcher. The ones who insisted on a harder question, a cleaner methodology, an honest sample size when a shortcut would have been easier to sell to a client. Call them legends if you like. What made them legends was rarely one landmark study. It was that they kept showing up, teaching, correcting, and quietly raising a bar that everyone around them then had to meet.
That’s the real argument for a community like ours: none of us gets sharper in isolation.
Kenya’s research space has no shortage of talent working alone. What we’re still building, together, is a habit: staying willing to teach, and just as willing to be taught - because in this work, learning never really stops.
Who taught you the research habit you’re proudest of? Did they know, at the time, that they were teaching you?
