We received a cover letter that started with "Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my interest in the position of…" πŸ˜…
We've all seen them. The generic cover letter that could have been sent to 50 different companies.

But this one was special.

It had the right keywords. The right tone. The right structure.

One problem; it was addressed to a completely different companyπŸ˜…

Not just a different role. A different industry. A different country. A completely different job that had nothing to do with what we were hiring for.

We called the applicant to give them the benefit of the doubt.

"Hi, just checking, did you mean to send this to us?"

Long pause.

"Oh… I used a template. I thought I changed all the placeholders."

He didn't.

The company name was still wrong. The role was still wrong. The only thing he changed was his name.

The lesson? A cover letter written for everyone is a cover letter written for no one.

"We value honesty."

Do you really?

We've seen it too many times, someone raises a concern, and the room goes quiet. Not because the concern wasn't valid. Because it was uncomfortable.

Most organizations don't have a problem with dishonesty. They have a problem with honesty that's inconvenient.

If you want honest feedback, you have to reward it, even when it's hard to hear.

Have you ever worked somewhere where honesty was rewarded, or punished? πŸ”

Three things companies get wrong... and why their best people start leaving… πŸ‘‡
A company reached out last week. They couldn't understand why turnover had spiked. Great salaries. Good benefits. Nice office.

Then we looked at three things:

1. Employees were asking for feedback... and getting silence.
Performance reviews happened once a year. Managers didn't know how to give regular feedback. People felt invisible.

2. People were solving problems... and being told "that's not your job."
Initiative was punished. The process was more important than the outcome. Employees learned to keep their heads down.

3. Exit interviews were treated as a formality... not a diagnosis.
Everyone had the same complaint. No one acted on it. The data was there. They just didn't want to see it.

They fixed these three things. Turnover dropped. Engagement improved.

The lesson: People don't leave companies. They leave systems that make them feel small.

What's one warning sign you've seen in a workplace losing good people? πŸ”

AI is a great assistant. But it's a terrible proofreader. πŸ˜…

We've seen it too many times; applications with leftover AI prompts, names that don't match (especially African names), companies that don't exist, and skills that sound impressive but don't hold up to a single follow up question.

AI wrote it. But you hit send.

AI is brilliant. It structures your thoughts, polishes your grammar, and helps you articulate things you might have struggled to say. But it doesn't know you. It doesn't know your story. And it certainly won't check that your name is spelled correctly or that the company you claim to have worked for actually exists.

The danger isn't AI. The danger is treating AI like a co-worker instead of a tool.

When you use AI:
βœ… Read every word.
βœ… Verify every fact.
βœ… Remove every prompt.
βœ… Check every name.
βœ… Make it sound like you, not like a robot that read 10,000 job descriptions.

AI can get you in the door. But if you can't speak to what it wrote, you won't stay in the room.

Have you ever spotted an AI error in an application or resume? Share below! πŸ‘‡

After interviewing for multiple senior roles, we noticed the same gap again and again…
We asked for three referees.
Some applicants sent two. Some sent one. A few sent none.
Not because they couldn't provide three. But because they didn't think it mattered.
Here's the thing it does:
Three referees tells a recruiter you've built relationships. It shows you've worked with enough people; managers, clients, colleagues, who can vouch for you. Two feels incomplete. One raises questions. None… well, none says you're not ready.
But let's zoom out. This isn't really about referees.
Here's a lesson that applies to every application you'll ever submit.
When an employer says "write your name in CAPS," then, write your name in CAPS.
When they say "begin with your surname," please, begin with your surname.
When they ask for "three referees," go ahead and send three.
When they say "attach your CV as PDF," kindly, don't send a Word document.
When they specify "subject line: JOB TITLE_YOUR NAME," kindly, don't make them guess.
These aren't power trips. These are filters.
Every instruction in a job ad is a test. Can you follow simple directions? Because if you can't follow the easy ones, why would an employer trust you with the hard ones?
In a pool of 50 applicants, small gaps become big signals. A missing third referee won't always disqualify you. But it will make a recruiter pause. And in a tight race, pauses turn into passes.
Next time you apply: read the instructions. Then read them again. Then follow them exactly.
The candidate who follows directions is the one who gets noticed first.
Not because they're the smartest. Not because they have the best CV. But because they showed up ready to listen.
And in any market, that's a rare and valuable thing.

Small details matter. Instructions aren't suggestions. And the market notices who pays attention.
What's one instruction you've seen applicants miss most often? Share in the comments! πŸ‘‡
