What is success, simplest definition; success is doing something that you love and getting someone to pay you for it. How does one become successful? Simple, by bringing VALUE to the market place. Our success is determined by our ability to offer a specific solution to a particular problem that is facing a particular individual/organization...Sounds easy right? Wrong, there is a major challenge!
Ask yourself, What is the world's population?... Why is it necessary to answer that? The simple reason is, whatever SOLUTION that you intend to bring into the market place in return for SUCCESS, someone else has preceded you in whatever industry you wish to serve and others will follow. The current competitive dynamics has moved from local to regional and now its global, The world has shrunk into one big common market place as a result of globalization. Key word, COMPETITION!!

Talent or Skill?

In life each individual is born with a particular toolkit that is hopefully sufficiently equipped with all the gear necessary to forge a clear path towards success. For some that is the case and usually comes in the form of talent i.e. a natural ability to be good at something especially without being taught while others are blessed with the comfort of a privileged background which allows them to make as many mistakes as necessary out of life with all the luxury of enjoying a soft landing pad, cushioning their each subsequent fall.

So what happens when you lack either? This unfortunate honor goes to the third category of life's representatives...should one quit and fall into oblivion? should one coil oneself and accept mediocrity, suffering and turmoil as the acceptable norm? The answer is a definite No!! What is the solution then? One word, SKILL!! A skill is defined as the ability to do something well, it is the mastery of expertise. A skill is not something that one acquires naturally, it is something that must be nurtured through time and process. A skill is something that one seeks to inherently establish through the force of discipline, perseverance and consistent behavior i.e. practice.

We all can master any skill necessary to enjoy insurmountable success despite our lack of a privileged startup in life. As we embark on developing our skills, remember that it is always OK to fail as it is only though failure that we are able to acquire the mastery needed. The more skill you acquire, the more competent you become but one should not just relent there. Having ability is one thing but being able to use that ability is another. In strategic management perspective, competency represents those unique qualities that we acquire that makes us do something better as compared to our challengers; the ability to use your competency to your advantage is referred to as capability. The higher the capability the more the rewards. A simple model that can be used to gauge your self is explained here: There are four levels of competency:

1. Unconscious Incompetence: - Not being able to know what needs to be done and how to even go about it.
2. Conscious Incompetence: - Not know how to do something but recognizing and understanding what needs to be done.
3. Conscious Competence: - knowing what and how to do something but require some time to demonstrate the skill.
4. Unconscious Competence: - The highest level of mastery; An individual who has had so much practice with a skill that it has become "second nature" and can be performed easily at any moments notice.

It is at the "Unconscious Competence" level that we are able to surpass our dreams but to reach this level it requires countless hours of self investment in preparation. To motivate oneself in this process, always remember that " those things in life which are the least rewarding are usually very fun and easy to do at the beginning but the more we do them they become difficult to stop while those things which are the most rewarding are usually extremely difficult at the beginning but the more and more we do them consistently they become second to our nature i.e. UNCONSCIOUS COMPETENCE". ANYTHING IN LIFE THAT COMES EASY HAS CONSEQUENCES BUT ANYTHING THAT IS WORKED FOR ONLY REAP REWARDS.

WHO AM I?....

Why is it necessary to understand who you are? In life we all want success, our success varies according to our individual perception of what is important to us. Regardless of how different we perceive, one thing is common, success can only be attracted through value. The more valuable you are, the more attractive you become in the market place....your value is determined by your problem solving capability, how knowledgeable are you? what skills do you posses? key question, why should I chose you over and above the next option or substitute? what is it that makes you different? what is your unique selling proposition? what is your personal brand?

Key self assessment question: What is it that you are known for? if I was to ask ten of the closest people in your inner circle to define you in one word, what is it that they will describe in common? ever wondered?... if you cannot define yourself, how would you expect the market place to define you and the solution that you bring?...In strategic management, it is paramount that a business understands its strategic intent, a strategic intent is nothing but the purpose for which an organization or something strives to exist...is your purpose clarified?

The greatest gift given to man is the power of vision; the process of envisioning is the one component that distinguishes successful individuals from the less successful. Why is it necessary to have a vision? Our vision is a representation of how we describe ourselves in the future and what we believe is possible. In life one should always envision what he/she wants to achieve then proceed by doing everything that is necessary to actualize it.
For us to achieve what we want , it is necessary that our present disciplines be guided by our future expectations. When we develop a vision, it represents a dream, the key is to ensure that we distinguish between dreaming and day dreaming! Any dream that is left vague becomes a daydream while one that is clearly articulated becomes a goal. A goal becomes more meaningful if once its developed, its preceded by an articulated action plan (blue print) on how it will be achieved.
Working through goals is nothing but preparing for opportunities which we do not have, remember, It is always better to be ready for an opportunity that we do not have , than having an opportunity which we are not prepared for. Note, success is a habit and will only come to those people who are constantly preparing for it; this element of preparation, represents nothing but working through faith and deep belief that whatever we are hoping for will eventually manifest.
The simple formula to master is that, that our Goals clarify our Destination, our Plans articulate how it is going to be achieved, our Motivation becomes the fuel that burns the fire of discipline and commitment.
