A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FISHERMAN IN LAKE VICTORIA

For a fisherman on Lake Victoria,... the day begins when most people are going to bed.
Around 6:00 PM, they head out into the deep water as the sun sets.

If they are hunting Omena (silverfish), they spend the entire night on the lake, using solar lamps to attract the fish to the surface. It is cold, physically exhausting work, often spent in small wooden canoes battling unpredictable winds and the occasional hippo or crocodile.

At dawn, the lake comes alive with the sound of "OBMs" (outboard motors) or the rhythm of oars as hundreds of boats race back to beaches like Dunga or Litare.

This is the peak of the day. The shore becomes a chaotic market: men haul heavy crates of Nile Perch and Tilapia onto the sand, while women traders bargain fiercely for the best catch.

By 9:00 AM, the heavy lifting is done. The fishermen sell their catch to middlemen or local cooperatives, clean their nets, and secure their boats. The rest of the morning is spent in "chamas" (social groups) at the beach, mending nets and sharing a meal—usually fresh fish and ugali.

By noon, they finally head home to sleep and escape the equatorial heat, resting just long enough to wake up and do it all over again by sunset.

It is a life of high risk and low pay, entirely dependent on the moods of the waters.
