We’re unwrapping our gifts in January - gifts of wisdom and lessons from the past year and the opportunities for growth that 2025 holds.

Our top three 2024 insights, while simple, resonated deeply:

1. Where there’s alignment, there’s progress. Whether it’s aligned teams, values-aligned clients, or staying true to our “why,” alignment leads to progress.

2. There’s always a solution. Always. This is a Crafting Kenya oldie but goodie that seems to show up every year, as we take on bigger product development challenges.

3. Action is the antidote. Take that first step.

As 2025 begins unfolding, we’re excited to apply these lessons and uncover new insights along the way.

What was your biggest takeaway from 2024? And what are you hoping to learn in 2025?

At Crafting Kenya, we believe in the power of community and extending the relevance of Kenya's heritage craftsmanship to new spaces. That’s why partnering as a General Sponsor for the American Chamber of Commerce Kenya 2024 Golf Tournament was such a meaningful highlight for us.

We proudly sponsored five prizes featuring our custom-designed Choma (Grill) Kit. Developed in-house by our product team, the Choma Kit draws inspiration from Kenya’s cherished tradition of Nyama Choma, which celebrates bringing people together for shared laughter and conversations around the grill. Each kit reflects our core values of superior craftsmanship, sustainability, and a commitment to supporting local industry. Unsurprisingly, the Choma kits were a hit among participants and audiences alike—after all, it’s always Choma season in Kenya!

Congratulations to the AMCHAM 2024 Golf Tournament winners!

What's life without a little play? As a product development company, our version of play may not look like children on a playground, but trust us—it’s just as fun! In true Crafting Kenya style, we've been experimenting with materials, colors, and techniques. Sometimes we had a plan, and other times we didn't: we just let the exploration lead the way. Our mantra? If you have an idea, bring it to life with whatever materials, colors, shapes, techniques, etc., you have available to you. Needless to say, some ideas have fallen into the "why-did-we-even-try" category. But every now and then, we stumble onto something so brilliant that we wonder if we accidentally became geniuses.

We blinked, and suddenly, we’re on the doorstep of the last three months of 2024! Where has the time gone? At Crafting Kenya, we’ve been deep in creation. We have been journeying across the landscape of materials, ideas, and techniques—constantly interrogating what’s possible when we merge them. Often beginning with unclear roadmaps and even abstract ideas, and patiently giving them form, we have surprised ourselves with the products resulting from the process. But there's another reward in all of this: seeing our collaborators beam with absolute joy when they see the work we've done for them.

How has your 2024 been so far? What have you been creating?

SUSTAINABLE FASHION IS POSSIBLE

It is often said that solutions to the world's biggest problems will come from the margins, not the mainstream. We've seen this firsthand through our work with niche brands that, despite sometimes lacking deep pockets, create solutions to long-standing sustainability issues. This reminds us all that change begins with complete dedication to a cause.

Today, we're proud to share a project where what could have been industrial waste destined for a landfill converged with artisanal production in a successful sustainable fashion story. The photos speak for themselves: the aesthetics are stunning, and those fortunate enough to own a Ziimara bag will not only look good. They will also feel good knowing they are making a positive impact.

A PROCESS TAILORED TO THE PROJECT

Following our proprietary product development process, Crafting Kenya researched, prototyped, and executed the appropriate construction methods to combine technically diverse materials—from deadstock textiles to handwoven natural fibers—into finished products of superior quality and finesse. Customization is core to our process, and every step was tailored to this unique project. Once production and quality control were completed, we provided comprehensive logistics support, managing the acquisition of import/export documentation and shipping, as is customary at Crafting Kenya.

COMPLEXITY OF WORKING WITH DEADSTOCK TEXTILES

Fashion collections are so named because they unify aesthetics, techniques, and materials into cohesive fashion narratives. However, using deadstock textiles presents a challenge, as they often come in limited quantities with varying prints, textures, and colors, making it nearly impossible to create a consistent product line.

Ziimara had a compelling solution to this challenge, which Crafting Kenya implemented from concept refinement all the way to finished product: producing small-batch bags unified by custom-designed elements handcrafted by Crafting Kenya’s artisan partners. Due to the small-batch production, each series would be a unique, limited edition, owned by only a select few.

100% VEGAN AND CIRCULAR BAG COLLECTION

As product development specialists, we are always excited to work with brands looking to bring their unique product visions to life.

Every now and then, brands present us with projects that require so much problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking, that our technical capabilities and creativity are inevitably stretched to new heights by project completion. Tapping into our solutions-oriented ethos, in-house technical capacity in design and R&D, and strong partnerships, we always accept the challenge.

In 2023, Ziimara, a sustainable accessories brand based in London, approached Crafting Kenya with an ambitious brief: to develop a line of 100% vegan and circular bags for the brand's 2024 Spring/Summer Collection. These bags would incorporate deadstock textiles from industrial production as the primary material, addressing the issue of fashion waste that many in the industry struggle to solve.
