Here in kenya people die from electrocution every other day owing to a variety of factors. While some die coz of their own stupidity, and/or lack of good judgement, most of these deaths are caused by malfunctional appliances or faulty wiring of the buildings. FROM BAD TO WORSE
One of the dumbest things you can do while at home is to try removing ice from your refrigerator walls using a sharp object. Things like knives , forks, tongs, spatula etc are taboo for de icing your fridge or freezer. If you are dumb enough to do this and you hear a hissing sound be aware that that is escaping refrigerant gas. Your next move should be to go line up at your favourite ATM machine and withdraw some thousands for that is what it will cost to remedy the situation.

Look again at the title of this article, it says from bad to worse. Thats exactly what will happen to you if you later decide to test whether your fridge can still cool a drink and switch it on. Yes it will run alright but there ll be no cooling effect at all. What you wont know is that as it runs without refrigerant the spot where you punched a hole is pulled into a vaccum and sucks in air which contains both oxygen and moisture. Your fridge/freezer has no worse enemy than these two guys. It will take an extremely competent technician , doing an extremely thorough service to give it back the life it had before your dumb act with a knife. Otherwise most technicians will just repair the damage and fill her up with new refrigerant and ask to be paid for a 'job well done'.

Yes, your fridge will be fully functional , maybe even perfoming as good as new but baibe, forget the 20yr lifespan predicted in it s manual. A journey towards the scrap yard begins like that. Chances are, within the year a technician will be working on it again, and again the following year, and six months later you ll be seeing another one. You will spend money on it like you are getting fridge maintenance allowance from your employer. Eventually you ll discard it and go for a new one.
