Riding the Storm

We all have aspirations to be better, have more, have great careers, run successful businesses, achieve certain goals and the like.
Unfortunately, these aspirations don’t just manifest themselves. There really is no such thing as instant success. A lot of hard work, discipline & perseverance amidst discouragement, sometimes dissolution are part and parcel of this journey.

The thing is not to give up – especially if this is your dream. But to take all that may be working against you as a stepping stone to your next step, and then the next till you find unstoppable momentum. Get someone you trust to walk with you, & you will eventually soar high if you do not give up.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

One of the hardest virtues in life is perseverance. This is especially so when things are not working as anticipated, or the results are not coming as fast as expected or you simply are not seeing progress after all the effort you are putting.

It is at these times when one can easily be distracted – to try something new, to take unnecessary breaks, chase after shiny object that promise quick returns. All these diverting one’s attention from the goal that one was so passionate about a while ago. The progress may not be evident in the work you are doing, but trust me it’s there… & sometimes you are the progress.
My advice, keep the focus, keep pushing, keep walking – the point is to keep moving even when you feel like giving up. More often than not, the reward is on the other side of perseverance.

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:4

Just Imagine…

You may have heard the phrase ‘we are living in unprecedented times’. Indeed we are and that may need unprecedented approaches to life & business in general. The old ways of doing things may not be working or giving the desired result. So what to do?

One approach may be to just pause, sit back, close your eyes & let your imagination run wild. Go back to that inner child where possibilities were endless. You could fly (literally), have super powers, believe in the endless dreams of your future self…
Imagination is powerful. & free! How about we take some time today to just sit & imagine… Look for fresh perspective, a different angle or re-create afresh. Think about it, everything we have today is a product of someone’s thoughts, their wild imagination. Therefore, there is the real possibility that if you can dream it, you can do it.

Adventure Awaits...

Last week I had a near death experience that gave me an even deeper appreciation for life. I thank God I was not seriously injured. The lesson I was reminded of is that life is unpredictable, an adventure with highs and lows, twist and turns, smooth and rough rides all culminating to a beautiful experience of our earthly existence – the days of our lives.

So just like life, entrepreneurship is a journey, not a destination. Embrace it, not for what you will make of it, but what it will make of you.

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Have you had a plan to do something, start something, take that first step but just can’t seem to find the time or the psyche to start? You tell yourself that you are waiting for the perfect moment when the psyche will be there, when funds will be available, when the stars will align….
Sometimes, the issue is fear of rejection. What will people say? What if it is not good enough?

Your creation, whatever it is – composing music, writing a book, planting a kitchen garden, starting a cake business or any other venture may seem daunting at first. Fear not, it would help if you understand that your creative process is a journey rather than a destination. The things you need to get done get easier the more you do them. You will hardly ever feel ready or confident enough (at least for some us). The secret of those who succeed is that they felt the fear, and did it anyway.
You can do the same.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. (Psalm 56:3)

It’s never too late…
You may have heard the phrase ‘ I’m too old for that.’
Too old to go back to school, start a new career after decades in a different profession, start an exercise regime after years of inactivity, start a business you are passionate about because of the risk of losing lifelong investments or the feeling that life has passed you by and wish you had done things differently sooner.
It is amazing that given the right motivation, one will do the very thing they had initially thought impossible. For example, no matter how old one feels, you will hit the gym or start jogging after a doctor’s report gives you less than a month to live if one continued with their sedentary lifestyle.
So, start where you are, with what you have.
Then the LORD said to him (Moses), "What is that in your hand?" "A staff," he replied. (Exodus 4:2)
What is that staff in your hand? Use it today, one step at a time.

You too can fly...
Have you ever felt inadequate, not good enough, not qualified enough for a task or responsibility at hand? Or that feeling of being overwhelmed by what needs to get done?
But despite these feelings, there is that inner voice that is nagging you, urging you to give it a try. There may be much to lose, but equally just as much to gain. You will just have to weigh the options and decide which risk is worth taking. Doing something that has a chance of succeeding or doing nothing at all.
You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. (Phil 4:13)
