Lake Victoria has continued to be a source of livelihood for thousands of people in Kenya. However, this has been threatened by the massive fish deaths experienced in the last few months. For the longest time aquaculture has been grappling with the high cost of feeds. Fish meal has been the main source of protein, however, following challenges such as overfishing, multiple use of the product by other animal feed producers and climate change, the stocks have been steadily declining causing further panic in the industry. The current aquaculture production is only at 18,000 MT with a demand of over 400,000 MT. To fill this gap efforts are to be made to solve the challenge of cost of fish feeds. The potential of insect meals as alternative protein sources in fish feeds has been a topic under discussion in various global forums.
