Common Poultry Diseases and Their Prevention

Marek’s Disease:

Symptoms: Paralysis of legs and wings, paleness, weight loss, and diarrhea.

Prevention: Vaccinate day-old chicks to avoid incidence4.

Newcastle Disease:

Symptoms: Sudden death, weakness, depression, diarrhea, and respiratory problems.

Prevention: Vaccination, hygiene, and biosecurity measures4.

Fowl Pox:

Symptoms: White spots on skin, scabby sores, ulcers in mouth, and decreased egg laying.

Treatment: Soft food, warm and dry environment, and vaccination5.

Botulism:

Symptoms: Tremors progressing to total body paralysis, easy-to-pull feathers, and sudden death.

Treatment: Antitoxin or Epsom salts if caught early. Keep the environment clean to prevent contamination5.

Fowl Cholera:

Symptoms: Greenish or yellowish diarrhea, joint pain, breathing difficulties, and darkened head or wattle.

Prevention: Vaccination and maintaining hygiene5.

Biosecurity: Well-defined biosecurity practices are crucial for successful poultry production. Implement hygiene measures, control vermin and insects, and limit disease transmission within and between barns. Effective biosecurity helps maintain a healthy flock1.

Downtime Between Flocks: Allow at least 14 days of downtime between flocks. Proper cleaning and disinfection during this period reduce disease transmission and prepare for the next flock1.

Pre-Placement Preparation: Before the new flock arrives, check heaters, floor temperature, ventilation, feeders, and other essential equipment. Proper preparation ensures a good start for the birds1.

Coccidiosis Prevention: Coccidiosis is caused by a microscopic intestinal parasite. Maintain intestinal integrity using innovative technologies to help birds perform well despite gut health challenges1.
