Well,my market feasibility study has been excellent today, and there is always so much to learn from the market.
One thing that keeps crossing my mind is that food seems to be getting more expensive every day. With the population increasing, perhaps in the near future, food will become as expensive as a lifestyle.
This morning I I conducted my study at Githurai,Kiambu county, the market was already a beehive of activity as early as 3:30 AM. Traders, retailers and different buyers were busy taking various commodities to their outlets.
Today, I decided to study the cabbage market.
Recently, cabbage prices had been terrible, with a piece going for as little as KSh 10, while bigger heads were fetching around KSh 20–30. Remember, these are market prices. The big question is: how much did the farmer actually receive at the farm gate after transport and other costs?
That's a hard question, but an important one.
To my surprise, the cabbage market is slowly turning in favour of farmers. Today, a piece was going for around KSh 50–80. A few off-takers I spoke to this morning believe that in the coming weeks, cabbage could become another dragon fruit—a crop whose prices suddenly make farmers smile.
Perhaps farmers might reap a fortune. And honestly, that is my everyday prayer.
All said and done, I left the market a motivated man, reminded once again that food is a necessity, food production is a business, and farmers are truly doing God's work.
