The Politics of the Photograph
There is a special kind of Kenyan political literacy that has nothing to do with manifestos, coalitions, or even ideology. It is the art of reading a photograph.
Take the one making rounds today: a smiling Fred Matiang'i, flanked by a Governor and an MP, standing under a Kenya Airways signage at JKIA like three old schoolmates who just happened to be catching the same flight. Caption it "chance encounter" and the internet nods along. But anyone who has followed Gusii politics for even a season knows that nothing in that region is ever entirely by chance — including who ends up in frame with whom, and who is left cropped out.
That is the genius of Kenyan political photography. It is not journalism. It is diplomacy conducted through camera shutter. A handshake photo can retire a rivalry that speeches never resolved. A group picture can quietly announce an alliance that no press release will confirm for another six months. And sometimes — this is the fun part — a photo can be staged precisely to contradict what everyone already knows is happening backstage.
Because backstage, the story is messier. One side of this frame has spent the last year building an independent Gusii political project aimed squarely at 2027. The other side of the frame has, on record, claimed credit for that very project — while also keeping one boot firmly planted inside the broad-based government tent that the first side is supposedly opposing. If that sounds contradictory, that's because it is. It's also completely normal. In Kenyan politics, you can be a rival, a patron, and a project-owner all at once, as long as you're smiling for the same camera.
Then there's the advice. When a Majority Whip starts publicly dispensing "solicited" wisdom to a presidential aspirant from a rival camp, it's rarely about goodwill. It's a message wrapped in courtesy — the political equivalent of a boxer offering his opponent a mint mid-round. Osoro didn't need Matiang'i to hear it. He needed the region to hear that he said it.
So what do we actually know, watching from the outside? Mostly this: politics-by-photograph is a language of implication, not confirmation. Every smile is doing at least two jobs — one for the cameras, one for the people counting who stood where, who spoke to whom, and who was suspiciously absent. By the time the picture reaches WhatsApp groups and becomes "breaking news," the real negotiation has usually already moved on to the next room.
The honest answer to "is something cooking?" is: something is always cooking. The photograph just tells you someone wanted you to notice the smoke.
What we don't know is rarely hidden by accident — and what they let us see is rarely accidental either.
