what should be your first line of action when you notice any disease outbreak in your fish farm?

1. Stop feeding: when you notice any sign of disease spread in your pond, please halt feeding as that will lead to mass mortality.

2. In a situation where there are much mortality, don't try to relocate the fish as that will worsen the situation. But if few mortality is noticed, then

3. Transfer them into another clean pond and initiate a salt-bath immediately. Fill the new pond with fresh water and add salt using 2.5g per liter dosage (or simply add enough salt until your pond water start testing like saline water)

4. Relocate the fish into the saline water if there are few mortality or initiate the salt bath in the pond where they're using the dosage that was stated in number 3.

5. The bath should should be repeated daily for 3 days. Resume feeding on the third day but make sure you do the number 6.

6. Medicate the fish feed using antibiotics (Oxytetracycline) with the 3g per kg. Use the medicated feed to feed them for at least 5 days but withdraw after 7 days.

7. Make sure you maintain high water management practices as that will help improve their general health.

From Fertilized Egg to Fingerling: The Magic of Tilapia Life Begins Here!

Did you know?

The journey of a healthy Tilapia starts with a well-cared-for fertilized egg. These tiny eggs are the foundation of every successful hatchery and fish farm.

With the right water quality, temperature, and oxygen levels, fertilized eggs hatch into fry within just a few days!

Why Farmers Should Care:

🔹 Proper egg handling = higher survival rates
🔹 Strong genetics = better growth and disease resistance
🔹 Healthy fry = profitable fish farming

Whether you're a hatchery operator or a new fish farmer, understanding the early stages of Tilapia development helps you plan better for quality production. Consult with us to hatch success - one egg at a time!

MUST YOU HARVEST YOUR TILAPIA FISH AFTER 6 - 8 MONTHS?
The most common advice to fish farmers has always been, 'you should harvest your fish after 6 - 8 months'. This should ONLY be taken as a guide.

The size and time at which one should harvest his fish is strictly Customer Dependent. There is no need of growing your fish up to 500 grams when your customers prefer smaller fish of 150 grams.

Similarly, there is no need of keeping the fish for 8 months when you can sell it at 4 months for a profit.

Remember, a customer may not buy an expensive fish of 500g when his preference is for a smaller fish.

Also remember that the earlier you harvest the fish, the more crops you will have in one year.....and the higher the profit.

THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. Your objective is to supply what he likes. Not what you want him to like.

DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM SELLING YOUR FISH?

Here are some of the common mistakes many fish farmers make:

1. WRONG SIZE OF FISH
Avoid growing your fish to a size that is not affordable by your customers. Large fish will only be purchased by big outlets and a few who can afford. Many rural consumers prefer small to moderate size for convenience and affordability. target this market....they are many.

2. POOR TIMING OF HARVESTING TIME
Never ambush the customer with your fish. His budget may not be prepared for this. Always make it known in advance that you be will selling your fish on a particular date. Contact your potential customers with this information.

AGAIN...avoid harvesting during times of low money circulation. E.g. when schools are opening, everyone is worried about school fees. On the other hand, during Christmas/Easter/Idd/Diwali, everyone wants to eat something nice (such as fish).

3. LACK OF CONSISTENCY
Many clients, especially hotels, prefer consistent and reliable supplies. If you have several ponds, try to sychronize your harvests so that your fish is available at regular (and predictable) intervals. LET YOUR CUSTOMERS KNOW THIS.

4. POOR FISH PREPARATION
Presenting dirty, un-graded fish to the market will not attract customers. Some customers may not even know how to remove scales and gut contents.
Try to be helpful by addressing some of these problems (by cleaning, grading, removing scales and gut contents, etc).

5. OVER-PRICING YOUR FISH
Don't set your prices based on what you saw in Timboktou. Do your survey locally, but also consider your production costs.

6. TARGETING THE MARKET WITH THE WRONG FISH SPECIES
Different regions have different fish preferences.....by species.
In Western Kenya, for example, catfish is always a hard fish to sell compared to tilapia. But in West Africa, catfish is a preferred delicacy.

KNOW YOUR MARKET.....if you are selling to Chinese contractors within your locality, be informed that they only buy LIVE FISH
