We've slowly progressed with our newly built RAS ( Recirculating Aquaculture System). Those little round objects in the tanks are what we call fish eggs, and this is what they look like before they become fingerlings and eventually the fish we're so used to seeing. More control and care from the very beginning.

These tanks have been designed to support fish eggs and early stage development in a controlled environment.
Every pipe, tank, and connection has a purpose.

Over the past few weeks, we've been converting this space into an incubation room for fish eggs and early stage fry.

Our goal is to : create a more controlled environment where we can better monitor water conditions during the earliest stages of development.

For us, this project is about exploring new approaches, improving our systems, and sharing what we learn along the way.

From Vihiga to Kirinyaga and beyond, fish farmers are constantly finding new ways to improve their operations. We hope this journey sparks ideas, conversations, and learning across the wider aquaculture community.

This is only the beginning. We're excited to share what comes next.

Every new system starts somewhere.

These tanks are part of our new incubation project, where fish eggs and newly hatched fry will be raised in a more controlled environment.
The goal isn't just to build more infrastructure. It's to learn what works, improve our processes, and share that knowledge with farmers across Kenya.

What is an RAS system?

RAS stands for Recirculating Aquaculture System. Instead of constantly replacing water, the system filters and reuses it while allowing farmers to monitor conditions more closely.
We are currently building our own RAS facility to support incubation and early fish development.

We’ve begun building an RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) designed to support incubation and early fish development in a more controlled environment.

This is a new stage for us, and we’ll be documenting the process from construction to operation.

At Daraja, we’ve grown from the ground up — learning, collaborating, and drawing inspiration from farmers and aquaculture practitioners across the country. We are constantly learning what works and what doesn’t, striving for better systems and better results over time.

Before you think about feed, think about your water.
If the water quality is wrong, fingerlings will struggle no matter how good the feed is.

We always remind farmers:

✅ Clean, well oxygenated water comes first
✅ Avoid overcrowding your pond
✅ Feed in small, controlled amounts (reduce waste and ammonia build up)
✅ Observe your fish DAILY, early signs always show in behaviour

Good water = healthy fish = better harvest.
