🚨 News Updates: The 2026 FIFA World Cup—co-hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States—is the first tournament to feature an expanded format of 48 teams. With 104 total matches, an increase from 64 in the previous editions, it consists of a Group Stage and a newly added Knockout Round before the traditional bracket.
The Tournament Structure
Group Stage: The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four teams. Each team plays a round-robin of three games.
Who Advances: The top two teams from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) and the eight best third-place teams advance.
Knockout Stages: The expansion creates a new Round of 32. From this point forward, it is a single-elimination tournament leading to the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final.
Key Details and Dates
Duration: June 11 to July 19.
Match Rules: If a knockout match is tied at full time, 30 minutes of extra time is played, followed by a penalty shootout if still undecided.
Host Cities: 16 cities across the three countries. The opening match takes place in Mexico City, and the final will be hosted at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
Matches Per Team: The eventual champion will play 8 matches in total, up from the previous 7.
