🌏As the number of buildings continues to grow worldwide, the United Nations projects that the global building footprint will double by 2050. This growth will significantly increase the demand for energy to power these buildings—at a time when energy resources are becoming increasingly scarce. Many of us have experienced blackouts during peak demand periods, which occur when energy consumption exceeds supply. Now, imagine the scale of energy required to support our buildings in the next 20, 30, or even 50 years.

📈Meeting this growing demand by simply producing more electricity is not a sustainable solution. Instead, improving energy efficiency is the most viable and responsible path forward. If we can plan to improve energy efficiency by 50% over the next 30 years, we may not need to increase energy production at all—and we can still support more buildings.

📌This is one of the key reasons many countries have adopted energy efficiency guidelines and requirements for both new and existing buildings.

✅One of the most well-known frameworks for building energy efficiency is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Under LEED, achieving at least 5% energy savings compared to the ASHRAE standard baseline is a minimum requirement. For example, if a typical hotel consumes 100 kWh/sqm/year, a LEED-certified hotel must use at least 5% less energy—that’s 95 kWh/sqm/year or lower. The higher the level of LEED certification, the greater the energy efficiency the project must achieve.

👉According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED-certified buildings save an average of 20% in energy consumption. This level of savings becomes especially impactful when considering a building’s full life cycle. Even reducing consumption by just 10 kWh/sqm/year can translate into significant cost savings and environmental benefits.

🍀Getting your building—whether existing or new—LEED certified not only reduces electricity use but also earns global recognition as a green building.

Promoting Sustainability in the Built Environment 🌎☘️

Thank you to LBL Construction for the opportunity to share our insights on sustainability in the built environment. It was encouraging to see such strong interest in green building and sustainable design from everyone involved.

The green building movement is gaining momentum in Cambodia — and soon, sustainability will no longer be optional, but essential for building owners, developers, designers, and contractors. As the built environment accounts for nearly one-third of global emissions, it plays a critical role in addressing climate change.

Together with LBL, we’re committed to advancing sustainability in the built environment, promoting green building practices, and exploring opportunities to collaborate toward a greener future.

We look forward to more knowledge-sharing sessions and future collaborations to continue driving this important movement forward.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the world’s most recognized green building certification. With over 100,000 certified projects globally, LEED continues to drive the movement toward sustainable, energy-efficient buildings—even in emerging markets.

In Cambodia, LEED has been gaining ground since the adoption of LEED v2009. To date, 13 projects have achieved LEED certification, with more than 20 others currently registered. This momentum reflects a growing national commitment to greener, high-performance buildings.

LEED-certified projects deliver value not only to owners, developers, and designers—but also to building occupants, local communities, and the environment. Rooted in the triple bottom line—People, Planet, and Profit—LEED ensures that sustainability benefits everyone.

🌏Climate change, efficient resource allocation, and economic viability are closely linked to the construction sector. To ensure that buildings are designed and built to address these pressing concerns, green building standards and certifications have been developed—such as BREEAM, LEED, WELL, and EDGE.

🏢Green building certification plays a crucial role in promoting and recognizing sustainable practices throughout the design, construction, and operational phases of a project. Here are some of the key roles it serves:

🔹Market Differentiation:
Certified green buildings stand out in a competitive market. They attract environmentally conscious investors, tenants, and clients, often resulting in higher property values or rental income.

🔹Environmental Impact Reduction:
Certified buildings are designed to lower carbon emissions, conserve resources, and reduce pollution—contributing meaningfully to global environmental goals.

🔹Occupant Health and Productivity:
These buildings often feature better indoor air quality, access to natural light, and enhanced thermal comfort, which can lead to improved health, well-being, and productivity for occupants.

🔹Improved Operational Efficiency:
By reducing energy and water consumption, certified buildings typically have lower operating costs, benefiting both owners and occupants over the building’s lifecycle.

🔹Establishing Sustainability Benchmarks:
Certifications like LEED, BREEAM, and EDGE provide standardized criteria that guide project teams in incorporating energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible material selection, and high indoor environmental quality.

🔹Regulatory Compliance and Incentives:
Green building certifications can help projects meet or exceed local building codes and may make them eligible for government incentives, tax breaks, or faster permitting processes.

🔹Risk Mitigation:
Certification promotes thorough planning, documentation, and quality assurance, which can reduce risks related to design flaws or construction issues.

The Connection Between Buildings and Human Health: The Role of Green Building Certifications.

In our modern world, we spend the majority of our time indoors—whether at home, in offices, or in public spaces. Yet, the impact of our built environment on human health is often underestimated. Poor indoor air quality, inadequate lighting, and exposure to harmful materials can contribute to various health issues, from respiratory diseases to mental stress. Green building certifications, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and WELL, have emerged as powerful tools to create healthier indoor environments. These certifications go beyond aesthetics and sustainability—they prioritize human well-being by addressing factors like air quality, water purity, thermal comfort, and mental wellness.

Advancing Green Building in Cambodia

Green building certifications play a critical role in reducing environmental impact, promoting occupant health, and enhancing asset value. These certification systems provide a robust framework and third-party verification to guide and validate sustainable design and construction practices.

EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) is one of the most widely adopted green building certification systems worldwide. Developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, EDGE was created to meet the demand for measurable, affordable, and credible sustainability solutions — particularly in emerging markets — and to unlock access to green financing.

EDGE evaluates three key performance areas:
✅ Energy Efficiency
✅ Water Efficiency
✅ Embodied Energy in Materials

A project must demonstrate a minimum of 20% improvement in each area compared to a conventional baseline to achieve EDGE Level 1 certification.

Notable EDGE-Certified Projects in Cambodia:
ACLEDA Institute of Business – EDGE Level 1 Certified
🟢 Energy Savings: 35% | Water: 44% | Materials: 32%
VTRUDT Tower – EDGE Level 1 Certified
🟢 Energy Savings: 24% | Water: 53% | Materials: 84%
AEON Mall Mean Chey – Preliminary EDGE Certified
🟢 Energy Savings: 27% | Water: 40% | Materials: 40%

Benefits of EDGE certification include:
+ Reduced operational costs through efficiency
+ Enhanced marketability and tenant appeal
+ Alignment with global sustainability objectives
+ Access to green financing opportunities
+ And more

GREEN Plaque is a accredited EDGE Expert and Auditor offering comprehensive support throughout the certification process — from early-stage design consultation to final project certification.
