Plastic-Free Coastlines

Plastic-Free Coastlines This is the story of how local solutions help solve global problems.

It needs a village to clean a village, therefore we engage local coastal communities to clean their own environment while supporting them with stable income and safe working conditions.

Taking the stage at was an incredible journey and experience. My talk, “What Does It Take to Clean a Village?” began as a journey 4 years ago when I started TONTOTON. Throughout these years, I’ve learned one crucial lesson: there is no one solution that can tackle plastic pollution alone. It requires a systemic overhaul, demanding deep policy changes and a reevaluation of how we consume, produce, and manage our waste.

Plastic pollution disproportionately harms the most vulnerable communities, nature, and wildlife. The greatest challenge in addressing this crisis is the that plastic remains profitable for business and profitability is the first goal of every business.

The bottom line is that “it takes a village to clean a village!” we need an inclusive system from the UN Plastic Treaty to local regulations working with private sector to people responsibility and demand for a change.

TONTOTON'S IMPACT IN 2022

As we open a forward-looking new year, we are very pleased to share with you our key impacts in the last year.

A total of 2,029 tons of post-consumer mismanaged plastic wastes were collected from vulnerable coastal communities just in 2022, with a total of 2,519 tons since we started operations in 2019.

This was made possible by 456 waste collectors who registered in our certified program. From zero-to-little daily income, our waste collectors were able to earn an average of USD14.25 daily, with the lowest earnings from 7.3USD to 19.35USD and the highest earnings from 276.32USD to 708.32USD.

By the end of the year, we were able to mobilize 305 waste segregation units that include households, schools, hotels, and temples -- all properly registered and accredited under our program.

With your help, 2023 will only be more impactful, more communities to be reached, more orphan plastics to be treated, and more innovative solutions to be created.

We leave no plastics behind. We collect ALL types of plastic, bring them back to circularity, or give them a proper end-of-life treatment.

We leave no one behind. We include, first of all, the communities that live in the daily reality of plastic pollution, the different community stakeholders and key players, the government, and private institutions and business to join in our mission to create an inclusive and responsible plastic collection and recycling.

COMMUNITY

Why do we always put important emphasis in involving the ?

Community participation is a key ingredient to the success of any development-oriented project. While many a time, we see them as mere recipients, the reality is that they have the power to change their own destinies given the proper awareness and tools to do so.

Our daily work is deeply embedded in the daily lives of the communities who suffer from the harmful effects of plastic pollution. With plastic credit, they are now able to find joy in cleaning their own environment, protect their cleaning milestones, and provide more for their families with the stable income they earn from the daily clean-ups.

This photo depicts a sense of belonging and pride for their work. Look out for our upcoming annual impact report to know more about these agents of environmental change and how they are able to turn around their then polluted environment into a sustainable home.

A LOST RESOURCE

When plastic wastes are mismanaged, we lose the opportunity to recover its value -- more so if it's a valuable plastic like this PET bottle.

They become source of air and land pollution and eventually, they will find their way to the ocean, harming our marine ecosystem.

TONTOTON works daily to remove mismanaged plastic waste in the most vulnerable coastal communities in Cambodia today. Constantly widening our reach to household level where segregation happens at source.

More and more business establishments like resorts and restaurants are also partaking in this community battle of removing and treating orphan plastics.

You can join in our mission to collect and treat ALL types of plastic wastes. Leaving nothing behind while supporting sustainable income to communities.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

By the end of 2022, we are happy to share that we have removed a total of 2,513 tons of orphan plastics from vulnerable coastal communities in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Our humble work that started in Vietnam in 2020 has taught us a lot as a company who continuously evolve and improve when it comes to our processes and operations.

More than anything, we have learned from the communities, individuals, and groups we have met and worked with.

And afterall, we have just begun. With your help, we will be able to do more!

Looking forward to a more productive 2023 with you all!

NOTHING LEFT BEHIND

is key in creating positive changes in the environment and communities.

is key in making these positive changes put into action.

With TONTOTON's certified system, we have been able to find the most polluted locations by and within waterways. Clean within days, and treat ALL types of plastics following standard classifications.

High value recyclables are returned back to commercial market, semi-value materials are recreated into creative and useful materials for the community, and highly compromised, low-value plastic wastes into co-processing.

You can help us sustain this system and improve even more! Join in our mission to collect all types of plastic and leave no one and nothing behind!

WHY WOULD YOU CARE?

Hear this, a significant part of a company's environmental impacts occurs when the primary materials for its products, such as polyester, are sourced and produced.

When collecting raw materials such as plastic bottles from community sources, a selective process of material collection takes place. The non-recyclable materials are not collected and remain in open areas in villages and nature. Leaving plastic waste without a solution in the poorest and most polluted places.

As an industry, when we channel our funds only to collect materials useful to our products (and into our image) while ignoring the rest when we are already in the polluted sites, we are more part of the problem than a solution.

Why not extend our care? Maximise our resources by responsible material sourcing? Collect all types and find ways how each of the plastic materials can be treated properly on its end-of-life.
