This article is dedicated to those of you who are considering making a career in public speaking. However, anyone who wants to launch a new company can also benefit from this information.

Do you want to share your message with the world? You can achieve this by publishing a book or public speaking. Speaking, however, is a fantastic way to convey your message. However, before starting your speaking career -- or any other business for that matter you must:

- be realistic - While you might believe that your message is unique or original,
after doing some research, you might discover that it isn't. "There is nothing
new under the sun”, as the adage goes.

- know what to look for or expect, be certain you understand what the
Speaking profession entails, research other speakers who speak on the same
or a related topic, and determine your target audience.

- creating a realistic plan designed specifically for speaking will help you to
succeed in the industry even as a novice speaker.

The art of speaking is NOT a one-size-fits-all endeavor, so how do you begin your speaking career?

Treat your speaking career like the most significant project you’ve ever undertaken. Create a Master Checklist that outlines all the necessary requirements of a speaking business. The questions should be written so that there are only three possible responses: “Yes”, “No”, and “Don’t know”. Consider each question objectively and respond honestly to each question that applies to your situation. You will ultimately be able to change certain questions from “Don’t know” to either “Yes” or “No” so don’t worry. Contact a reputable speaker agency that provides one-on-one consultation for assistance if you feel uncertain or stuck with this task.

Once properly completed, your Master Checklist will give you a solid foundation to start your speaking career. Bear in mind that not even the most seasoned or costly speaker agency can guarantee your success in this business but rest assured that the more definite your plan, the higher your chances of success! You will be better prepared for what is ahead if you take the time and effort to create your checklist and develop a strategy.

The Importance of Video

Event planners want to see what they are getting when they book you to speak to their attendees. They want to see you in action if they are going to consider paying you to appear at their event. This means that you must have good, audible videos of you presenting, though not necessarily on the same topic that you would be presenting for them.

If you are just beginning your speaking career but you do not have any video as yet, that’s easy to fix. Apply to speak for FREE at events in your local area and in exchange ask that the event be recorded. Ensure that the audience is also captured in the recording and that it is at a moment when you have the audience engaged.

Eventually, you might find that one professionally recorded video is worth more than 100 amateur recordings. It might be worth your while to pay a professional if you have to. Whatever is your decision, the important thing is video, video, video.
