Imagine a new home designed in such a way as to require no power from the grid. Everything you need to live is still available such as heating,cooling,hot-water, power for your big screen tv ,2 door refrigerator, huge chest freezer, large double wall oven with microwave and cook-top. All of the lighting in the house is placed such that lighting levels are optimum for all normal activities while still requiring no external power.

Lighting systems may be low voltage DC instead of higher voltage AC. A ground loop geothermal system boosts the room specific room specific heating. A passive solar design moves warm air from the ceiling outside and cool air from the basement up to main living area.

We used to design our homes in cayman to perform in our hot, humid, hurricane prone climate.

The typical old caymanian house was great design and engineering by our forefathers. Overhangs and porches to keep sun out, windows that opened opposite to the prevailing winds to pull heat out, rainwater capture cisterns, stilted floor to avoid flooding and cooling, endemic plants and trees that needed little or no maintenance, etc.

Some of the best new green buildings are those that challenge our ideas of conventional architecture—but don’t challenge the environment. Building designs that embrace and respond to the local environment, called bioclimatic architecture, as opposed to trying to thwart nature with mechanical systems…
