Transportation is a fundamental aspect of urban planning strategies due to its pivotal role in shaping the functionality, accessibility, and sustainability of cities. Here's why transportation is crucial in urban planning:

Accessibility and Mobility: Efficient transportation systems ensure that people can easily access essential services, job opportunities, education, and recreational facilities within a city. A well-connected transportation network enhances mobility, allowing residents to travel conveniently and access various parts of the city without hassle.

Economic Development: Transportation infrastructure plays a vital role in driving economic growth within urban areas. Efficient transportation networks facilitate the movement of goods and services, enabling businesses to operate smoothly and access markets. Additionally, well-planned transportation systems can attract investment, boost tourism, and stimulate job creation.
Reducing Congestion and Pollution: Effective urban transportation planning aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce environmental pollution. By promoting alternative modes of transportation such as public transit, cycling, and walking, cities can decrease reliance on private vehicles, thereby mitigating traffic congestion and lowering emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants.

Social Equity: Access to transportation impacts social equity by ensuring that all residents, regardless of income or location, can access essential services and opportunities. Public transportation systems and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure make cities more inclusive by providing affordable and accessible mobility options for disadvantaged communities.

Land Use and Spatial Planning: Transportation planning influences land use patterns and urban development. By strategically locating transportation hubs, such as transit stations and interchanges, urban planners can encourage compact, mixed-use development, reduce sprawl, and promote sustainable growth patterns that maximize the efficiency of transportation infrastructure.
Quality of Life: A well-designed transportation system enhances the quality of life for urban residents by reducing commute times, improving air quality, and promoting active modes of transportation like walking and cycling. Accessible and efficient transportation options also contribute to a vibrant urban environment by facilitating social interactions and cultural exchange.

Resilience and Adaptation: In the face of challenges such as climate change and natural disasters, resilient transportation infrastructure is essential for ensuring the continued functionality of cities. Urban planners must incorporate resilience measures into transportation systems to withstand extreme weather events, maintain critical connections, and facilitate emergency response efforts.

In summary, transportation is a critical component of urban planning strategies, influencing various aspects of urban life, including accessibility, economic development, environmental sustainability, social equity, and resilience. By prioritizing efficient, sustainable, and inclusive transportation solutions, cities can create more livable, vibrant, and resilient urban environments for current and future generations.

The development of social criteria goes straightforward towards social sustainability. The basic sense of “Social Sustainability” implies a system of alleviation of poverty. The theory of “Social Sustainability” calls for economic growth constrained by the requirements of social equity. To link these, resource use must be prioritized, and cherish equitable source distribution. This process has been emerged in the Indian state of Kerala.

“Human development is the expansion of people’s freedoms
to live long, healthy and creative lives; to advance other goals. they have reason to value; and to engage actively in shaping
development equitably and sustainably on a shared planet” (UNDP 2010, p. 22).
