In this episode of SWorld's Pioneers series, Najwa Ghanem El Turc traces a career that began in nursing and became a lifelong commitment to some of Lebanon's most vulnerable communities. Trained first as a nurse, she was invited by Sister Sara, head of the Lebanese School for Social Training, to pursue social work — earning her license in Beirut in 1968.
"Our specialty isn't just a profession — it's a service." Her message to the next generation: love the work, and hold on to the belief that people can change.

A graduate of the Institut des Sciences Sociales (Université Saint-Joseph) in Beirut, Dr. Foumia Bou Assy went on to earn her PhD at Université Laval in Québec — becoming the first USJ-trained social worker to hold a doctorate in the field. She returned to Lebanon to found the Master's program in Social Work at the Lebanese University, shaping the profession for the generations that followed her.

Sister Annie Kahwajian, a social worker and member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, reflects on 26 years of accompanying individuals and families in complex circumstances.
She discusses the relationship between religious life and professional social work, the importance of respecting each person’s choices, and the responsibility of social workers to defend rights and contribute to changes in social policies.
Her message to future social workers: remain committed to human dignity, professional ethics, openness, and trust in every person’s capacities.
