🌿 ORIENTATE Stakeholder Engagement Workshop
How can we move towards a more circular economy in the agricultural sector?

Tomorrow, on 6 October 2026, the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) will host the ORIENTATE Stakeholder Engagement Workshop.

The event will bring together key stakeholders to explore the role of NARC in advancing the olive sector and circular economy, the opportunities offered by Interreg NEXT MED for sustainable and resilient agriculture, and the innovative solutions developed through the ORIENTATE Project.

🎥 The programme will also feature the ORIENTATE project video, followed by closing remarks and a networking session.

🌱Two Value Chains, One Circular Vision

ORIENTATE promotes circular solutions across two strategic Mediterranean agri-food sectors: citrus and olive.
Although different production chains generate different by-products, both share the same challenge: transforming agricultural residues into valuable resources through sustainable technologies and innovative business models.

🍊 Citrus
Peels, pulp and seeds can be recovered for:
🥣 food ingredients
🐄 livestock feed
🌱 compost
⚡ bioenergy

🫒 Olive
Olive pomace, pits and olive mill wastewater can also be transformed into:
⚡ renewable energy
🧪 bio-based products
🌱 soil amendments
🔬 valuable bioactive compounds

🤝By bringing these experiences together, ORIENTATE encourages knowledge exchange and the development of replicable circular agriculture models across Mediterranean countries.

Circular Agriculture Begins with Agricultural By-products

Across the Mediterranean, 🍊 citrus production generates significant quantities of peels, pulp and seeds during juice processing. Rather than being treated as waste, these materials can become valuable resources within a circular economy ♻️.

Within ORIENTATE, the citrus value chain represents one of the project's key case studies for exploring 🌱 sustainable solutions that reduce waste generation and create new opportunities for agriculture.

From animal feed to natural ingredients, compost and renewable energy, citrus by-products demonstrate how innovation can support both environmental sustainability and local economic development.

🇮🇹 Sicily offers an important example of this transition, combining 🌾 agricultural tradition with 💡 circular innovation.

🌱Preparing for Job Shadowing: Building Knowledge Across the Mediterranean

One of the key activities of the ORIENTATE project within Work Package 3 is Job Shadowing, designed to strengthen knowledge exchange and capacity building among project partners.🤝
📅 From 9th to 20th November, experts and professionals from Italy, Spain, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey will participate in technical visits across Sicily and Spain, observing practical examples of circular agriculture ♻️ and sustainable management of agricultural by-products.
🔎The Job Shadowing activities will provide participants with the opportunity to learn directly from farms, processing facilities, laboratories and innovation actors, exploring solutions that can be adapted and replicated in different Mediterranean contexts.
📚Throughout September, we will introduce the themes and objectives that will guide this shared learning experience.

♻️🌱 إعادة التفكير في المخلفات الزراعية: من عبء إلى فرصة
ماذا لو لم تكن المخلفات الزراعية نهاية دورة الإنتاج، بل بداية لدورة جديدة؟
في كثير من الأنشطة الزراعية، تبقى كميات من المواد الناتجة عن الإنتاج دون استفادة كاملة منها. وهنا تبدأ فكرة مختلفة: بدل التعامل معها كمخلفات يجب التخلص منها، يمكن النظر إليها باعتبارها موارد ما زالت تحمل قيمة يمكن استعادتها والاستفادة منها. 💡
ضمن مشروع ORIENTATE، المموّل من برنامج Interreg NEXT MED والاتحاد الأوروبي 🇪🇺، يتم العمل على إعادة التفكير في كيفية استخدام الموارد الزراعية، خصوصًا مخلفات الحمضيات 🍊 والزيتون 🫒، واستكشاف إمكانات تحويلها إلى منتجات حيوية ذات قيمة مضافة.
الفكرة لا تقتصر على إيجاد استخدام جديد للمخلفات، بل تمتد إلى استخراج أكبر قيمة ممكنة من الموارد التي نملكها أصلًا، وتقليل ما يُفقد منها خلال دورة الإنتاج.
🌿 وهنا يصبح الاستخدام الأمثل للموارد خطوة عملية نحو الاستدامة:
مورد يُستخدم بكفاءة أكبر، مخلفات أقل، وقيمة جديدة يمكن أن تعود إلى الدورة الاقتصادية بدل أن تضيع خارجها.
لأن مستقبل الزراعة المستدامة قد لا يعتمد فقط على إنتاج المزيد، بل أيضًا على أن نتعلم كيف نستفيد أكثر مما ننتجه بالفعل.
