Let's Talk Waste was a success!

We are truly grateful for the participation and support received from everyone involved in our recent conference, which focused on sustainability and waste management practices, aimed at inspiring a better future.

Thank you to The Deputy of Mission of The Embassy of Switzerland, Maja Messmer Mokhtar, who reminded the important contribution Swissnex had in creating the competition of the Swiss-Middle East Circular Economy for Youth Initiative (SMECEYI) at the Swiss Pavilion of Expo 2020 Dubai 2020.

We sincerely want to thank everyone who participated and supported us. Our esteemed panelists from Lebanon Georges Bitar and Ziad Abichaker, and from Switzerland Roger Marti and Daniel Schwendemann who all provided invaluable insights and expertise on waste management strategies, innovative technologies, and their passion to environmental sustainability.

It is our sincere hope that this event provided valuable insights and information on existing practices and the challenges that remain to be tackled. We take pride in having facilitated discussions on such important issues, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue and working collaboratively towards a cleaner, more sustainable future!

Meet Ziad Abichaker, a Lebanese environmental engineer, industrial engineer, and self-proclaimed "Master Garbage Man," as one of our esteemed speakers.

Ziad has dedicated his career to finding innovative solutions to Lebanon's waste crisis. As the CEO of Cedar Environmental, Ziad has spearheaded the construction of municipal recycling facilities on the communal level, breaking away from the traditional central mega-recycling plant trend. His company produces organically certified fertilizers from recyclable materials, eliminating the need for waste disposal and reducing environmental impact.

In addition to his impressive work in the recycling industry, Ziad and his team have developed groundbreaking technologies to convert plastic bags into solid plastic panels called ECO-BOARD, which are used to replace traditional wooden and steel panels outdoors. This revolutionary process has won the 2013 International Energy Globe Award and has garnered global recognition.

Ziad has also been recognized for his innovative work with numerous awards and honors, including the Ford Motor Company Environmental & Conservation award for the Middle East and the Arab World Social Innovator award by Synergos Institute in New York City. His commitment to creating sustainable solutions to waste management and promoting environmental protection has earned him speaking slots at TEDxBeirut and numerous TV appearances.

We are thrilled to have Ziad share his expertise and innovative ideas at Let's talk Waste conference. Join us to hear him speaking about waste turning into plastic panels and much more!

Meet one of the speakers of Let’s talk Waste!

Dr. Roger Marti is a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at HES and a leading expert in process chemistry. He is Plasticycle’s mentor since the beginning of its journey, providing guidance and insight to the team.

With a background in chemistry, including a PhD from ETH in Zurich, he has the expertise to provide important knowledge on chemical recycling practices and polymers. In 2004, he became a Professor of Organic Chemistry at ZHAW in Winterthur/Wädenswil, and since 2009, he has been teaching Organic Chemistry & Process Chemistry at Haute école d’ingénierie et d’architecture de Fribourg.

Are you interested in learning about innovative synthesis technologies for chemical recycling?

Join us on May 4th to hear Dr. Marti speak about the practices used in Switzerland and how they could be applicable in Lebanon. The perfect opportunity to learn how synthetic organic chemistry plays a role in the plastic recycling field.

Meet one of the speakers of Let’s talk Waste!

Georges Bitar is a passionate Lebanese social entrepreneur who has found an innovative solution to the country's waste-related issues. He is the founder of Live Love Recycle, a digital platform that connects all the stakeholder of the recycling process in Lebanon.

Users can request a pick-up for their recyclables or find one of the nearly 20 recycling shops located throughout Lebanon with just a few clicks. The service is free, and users are motivated to adopt proper waste management practices through rewards and incentives offered by the app. As a result, this system has saved hundreds of tons of waste from polluting the Mediterranean Sea and is widely used in the Lebanese capital and beyond.

In 2018, Live Love Recycle received a grant from the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the World Food Programme. Since then, the initiative has won several awards for its critical role in Lebanese waste management efforts. Forbes Middle East even recognized it as one of the 10 most sustainable startups in the MENA during its debut year.

Georges and his team are an excellent example of social entrepreneurship that creates new jobs while supporting the environment. We believe that digital solutions can play a significant role in managing the waste crisis, and Georges' mission to tackle the Lebanese waste issue can inspire other young entrepreneurs. We are excited to hear about his vision and experience!

Let's remember together a special day!

On July 14th, our team attended a full day at HEIA-FR.
In the morning, the team presented the project and its evolution at a round table with Plasticycle’s close network, which includes members from Haute école d'ingénierie et d'architecture de Fribourg, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik - USEK and HEC Lausanne. Afterwards, all partners had the opportunity to present their institutions, departments and projects, facilitating discussion and a recapping together.

In the second part of the day the Plasticycle team separated from the academic professors to hold an internal meeting about their future and next steps following this first testing sprint for project implementation. The professors, on the other hand, met to discuss possibilities for exchange programs and finalize all potential collaboration streams.

We would like to thank HEIA-FR for having us and being one of our Swiss partners!
