Outline: Global economic power is shifting from the West to the East. The U.S. will experience low growth with a high unemployment rate and fiscal and current account deficits for years to come. Even the Fed’s expansionary QE1 and QE2 programs may have limited impacts on growth and job creation. The EU countries are faring worse, with their debt crises threatening to spark another global banking crisis. Spain, the fourth largest economy in the EU, has both government funding problems and capital problems for its banks; the 10-year yield on its bonds has climbed recently despite the European Central Bank’s massive liquidity injections.
Against this backdrop, Asia is doing relatively well. But how optimistic should Asia be about its future prospects? Can China, with its slowing growth and upcoming leadership transition, help provide world stability and growth in place of the U.S. and the EU? As for ASEAN, can its coming economic integration shield it from global volatility? After two “lost decades,” how much of a player is Japan? Can India’s new “Look East” policy help spur Asian growth? How will Asia’s economies be transformed in the coming decade?
