Mozambique is located in southeastern Africa. It is bordered by Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Madagascar to the east by the Mozambique Strait, all of which belong to the famous Mozambique gemstone belt in East Africa.
Although Mozambique has been known for its wealth of gemstones for a long time, it has only been as recent as 2008 that commercial amounts of gem quality rubies from Mozambique have appeared on the market. The rubies are found in the Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces in the north of the country.
Unlike the marble-type rubies produced in Mogok and Mong Hsu in Burma, the deposit in Mozambique is related to an amphibolite host-rock. The inclusions, chemical fingerprints, and spectra associated with gemstones from amphibolites are often very different from rubies mined from marble deposits.
