While red garnets have been known and treasured for thousands of years, tsavorite, a type of green grossular garnet, was found only in recent decades.
Tsavorite was named after Tsavo East National Park in Kenya, where it was discovered in the early '70s. Soon after that, tsavorite gained popularity due to a successful marketing campaign in the US.
Tsavorite is known for its lush green colour, arising from trace elements of chromium and vanadium. It ranges from yellowish-green, through green to bluish-green. However, the most sought-after shade is emerald green.
In general, tsavorites can be very clean. However, they usually come in small sizes. Stones weighing three carats or more are considered exceptional. The larger the size, the rarer it is.
