Classes of Fire - Basic Things To Know โœ…โš“๏ธ

Fires are classified according to the type of fuel that is burning. Identifying the correct class of fire is essential because each class requires a specific type of fire extinguisher. Using the wrong extinguisher can spread the fire, increase hazards, or endanger lives.

Class A โ€“ Ordinary Combustibles

* Fuel: Wood, paper, cloth, rubber, plastics, and textiles.
* Common Extinguisher: Water, Foam, or ABC Dry Chemical.
* Example: Cabin furniture, cardboard boxes, or wooden pallets on board.

Class B โ€“ Flammable Liquids

* Fuel: Gasoline, diesel, oil, paint, solvents, and other flammable liquids.
* Common Extinguisher: Foam, COโ‚‚, BC Dry Chemical, or ABC Dry Chemical.
* Example: Fuel oil leaks or paint locker fires.

Class C โ€“ Electrical Equipment

* Fuel: Energized electrical equipment such as switchboards, motors, generators, and wiring.
* Common Extinguisher: COโ‚‚ or Dry Chemical.
* Important: Isolate the electrical power before using water or foam.

Class D โ€“ Combustible Metals

* Fuel: Magnesium, sodium, potassium, titanium, lithium, and similar metals.
* Common Extinguisher: Special Class D dry powder only.
* Example: Metal processing or specialized industrial operations.

Class K โ€“ Cooking Oils and Fats

* Fuel: Cooking oils, animal fats, and vegetable oils used in deep fryers and galley equipment.
* Common Extinguisher: Wet Chemical extinguisher.
* Example: Deep-fat fryer fire in a shipโ€™s galley.

Firefighting Reminders

* Always identify the class of fire before selecting an extinguisher.
* Never use water on Class B, energized Class C, or Class D fires.
* Use the PASS method:
* P โ€“ Pull the pin.
* A โ€“ Aim at the base of the fire.
* S โ€“ Squeeze the handle.
* S โ€“ Sweep from side to side.
* Raise the alarm, notify the bridge, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) before fighting a fire.

Understanding the different classes of fire enables seafarers to choose the correct firefighting equipment, control fires safely, minimize damage, and protect lives, the vessel, and the marine environment.
