Sri Lanka is renowned worldwide for fine gemstones and other minerals ever since the very early days of international shipping routes and trade being established.

Gem and Mineral Mining Federation of Sri Lanka was established in the year 2001 by several individuals engaged in Gem and Mineral Mining, who were conscious about the ethics and development of the Mining industry in Sri Lanka and the persons involved in it. Since then the Gem and Mineral Mining Federation of Sri Lanka has been endeavoring to achieve its objects.

The Federation has been Registered as a Non Governmental Organization under Voluntary Social Services Organization (Registration and Supervision) Act No.31 of 1980 as amended by Act No. 8 of 1998.

Gem and Mineral Mining Federation is recognized by the Government as an organization related to gem and Mineral industry and operates under the supervision of the Government of Sri Lanka.
