🌍 BIG NEWS FOR CARTO-NERDS: The UN Just Voted to "Correct the Map"! 🗺️

In a historic move, the United Nations General Assembly has passed a non-binding resolution to phase out the traditional, 16th-century Mercator projection in favor of the Equal Earth projection.

Spearheaded by Togo and backed by the African Union, the "Correct the Map" initiative aims to dismantle centuries of Eurocentric visual bias in our everyday geography.

🔍 Mercator vs. Equal Earth: What's the Difference?

As GIS professionals, we know that flattening a 3D sphere onto a 2D plane always requires a compromise. Here is how these two projections approach that problem:

The Mercator Projection (Conformal): Created in 1569 for sea navigation, it preserves angles and local shapes perfectly. However, it severely distorts area/size as you move away from the equator. This creates the infamous "Greenland Problem," making Greenland look the same size as Africa, even though Africa is actually 14 times larger!

The Equal Earth Projection (Equal-Area): Created in 2018 by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson, and Bernhard Jenny, this projection preserves relative size across the globe. Africa, South America, and India are shown in their true, massive proportions relative to North America and Europe, though it slightly distorts shapes near the edges to achieve this.

💼 What are the Impacts of This Shift?

Educational & Cultural Equality: For centuries, the Mercator map has subtly reinforced geopolitical biases by making northern hemisphere nations look disproportionately massive and powerful. Switching to Equal Earth in schools and media fosters a fairer, more accurate worldview.

Everyday Tech & GIS Standards: While the resolution is non-binding, it puts immense public pressure on tech giants, textbook publishers, and government agencies to update their default world maps.

Navigation Remains Untouched: Don't worry—Mercator isn't going anywhere for marine or aviation navigation, where preserving compass bearings is a matter of safety.

This historic decision reminds us that the choices we make in cartography don't just map the world—they shape how we perceive it.
