Empowering Educators to Drive Spatial Intelligence Across Sri Lanka 🌏

In a milestone initiative to transform school-level spatial education, GIS Solutions (Pvt) Ltd recently contributed technical expertise and master training to a nationwide capacity-building program organized and fully funded by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. GIS Solutions extends its sincere appreciation to Ms. L. Rasika Silva, Director of the National Languages and Humanities Branch, for her vision and leadership in organizing these workshops, as well as to the Ministry for funding this vital project. Operating as part of its corporate mission as the sole authorized distributor of Esri technology in Sri Lanka, GIS Solutions participated in these sessions to help bridge the longstanding gap between theoretical textbook knowledge and practical software application for secondary school geography educators across the island. 🗺️

The initiative commenced during the 2024–2025 period with a series of 10 provincial training programs hosted at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Maharagama. Delivered in native languages (8 sessions in Sinhala and 2 in Tamil) the workshops provided over 500 secondary school geography teachers with direct, hands-on experience using GIS software and digital mapping workflows. 👩‍🏫

Building on this foundational success, an advanced extension program was conducted in 2026 at a specialized venue outside the NIE premises. This separate session introduced educators to modern geospatial tools and immersive learning platforms:

• NatGeo Mapmaker: An intuitive, interactive mapping web application co-developed by Esri and National Geographic to make spatial thinking accessible and engaging for school children. 🌍

• GeoAI & Field Data Collection: Digital field survey workflows using ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps for real-world data collection and analysis. 📍

• Immersive Technologies: High-impact visualization tools, including ArcGIS Earth and Virtual Reality (VR) applications, bringing interactive geography to life in the classroom. 🥽

Although Geographic Information Systems have long been included in the national secondary school geography curriculum, classroom instruction was historically limited to theoretical concepts due to a lack of practical software access and teacher training. GIS Solutions (Pvt) Ltd has been actively working to resolve this challenge for over a decade. Since 2012, GIS Solutions has maintained a continuous collaboration with both the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the National Institute of Education (NIE). Over the past 14 years, the company has contributed to numerous curriculum development consultations, capacity-building workshops, and educational outreach projects across Sri Lanka. By equipping teachers with modern digital tools, GIS Solutions and the Ministry of Education are fostering a tech-fluent, spatially aware generation capable of solving real-world regional and environmental challenges through location intelligence. 🚀
