“From Maps to Decisions: How GeoAI is Transforming Disaster Resilience”

The concluding panel discussion of the Geo AI for Disaster Resilience conference, featuring Prof. Nishara Fernando, Dr Danushka Jayathilaka, Mrs Preethika Madhavi Jayakodi, and Mr Supun Siriwardhana, brought forward an interesting perspective on Geo AI, which is that it is not simply about advanced technology, but about how effectively it can support vulnerable communities in real-world situations. Moderated by Dr. Thisara Geethika Perera, the session explored how GeoAI-driven technologies and spatial intelligence are shaping the future of disaster resilience and decision-making.

The panel's consensus was not to treat Geo AI as a silver bullet, but as a powerful tool to be combined with domain expertise, quality data, community participation, and institutional readiness.

Mr Supun Siriwardane highlighted an important challenge raised when coping with disasters, even the most advanced Geo AI platforms are ineffective if organizations lack timely data, technical capacity, and practical implementation strategies. He also emphasizes that improving data accessibility
and strengthening domain knowledge sharing are critical steps toward effective disaster resilience in Sri Lanka.

The discussion reinforced that the future of Geo AI lies not only in technological innovation but in combining data, domain expertise, governance, and human understanding to support resilient communities.
