๐ GeoAI Lab at NBRO Hosts a Full-Day Training on Drone Technology for Urban Informatics and Planning Students ๐
On 19th November 2025, the GeoAI Lab at NBRO successfully conducted a comprehensive full-day training session on drone technology and its applications for 120 undergraduate students from the Urban Informatics and Planning department at the University of Moratuwa. This training aimed to provide students with a deep dive into both the technical and practical aspects of UAV technology and its relevance to urban planning, surveying, and disaster management. ๐

Morning Session:
The morning session kicked off with an introduction to the fundamentals of UAV technology. Students learned about the components of drones, safety regulations, and the best practices for responsible flying. The highlight of the session was the hands-on drone handling experience, where students were given the opportunity to operate drones in real-world conditions, allowing them to better understand flight behavior and develop practical skills in flying UAVs. ๐ฎโ๏ธ
๐ป Evening Session:
The focus shifted to the applications of drone technology in the afternoon. Students explored how to process aerial data using photogrammetry and GIS tools. They learned how to convert raw aerial imagery into valuable spatial information, a crucial skill for urban planning, surveying, and disaster management. The session covered workflow integration, highlighting how UAV data is used to enhance decision-making and spatial analysis in real-world scenarios. ๐๐
This training session was a great success in empowering the next generation of professionals with the knowledge and skills to integrate UAV technology into planning, surveying, and disaster risk reduction. ๐ฑ๐ก
Big thanks to everyone who made this training session a success, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this knowledge in future urban planning initiatives! ๐๏ธ๐
