Srilanka is blessed with more gemological riches when compared to any other country in the world and the spectacular range of jewels found in its soil. The tropical island of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is most famous for its lovely sapphires, but it also produces a range of other gemstones is one of the major hubs of gem mining in the world . when Marco Polo traveled to Sri Lanka in 1292, he was

amazed to find this invaluable supply of treasure in varied types and colour. The beautiful island in the shape of a pear is also famous for its tea and rubber plantations as well as for gem mines and alluvial gem gravels that have been producing the best quality gems for centuries. According to geological history, gemstones were discovered in this charming island not prior to 500 B.C. During this period the Buddhists who traveled to Sri Lanka from Northern India found some precious gems while taking their bath in the streams and rivers of this island. The erosion of the rocks resulted to elongated placer deposits laden with precious gemstones in the beds of the flowing streams in the valleys which were located in the lower altitudes. The monks set these attractive colorful stones in their rings and other forms of jewellery like bracelets and armlets frequently worn during those days. During the course of their travels they traded these stones in the different markets of Asia and Europe. Interesting mythical stories state that King Solomon was so impressed with the gems of Ceylon, that he gifted Queen of Sheba these gemstones to woo her. It is also known that the Imperial Treasury of the Soviet Union prides itself of a beautiful red spinel from Sri Lanka, weighing around 400 carats. A giant oval-cut spinel also known as the "Black Prince's ruby" is studded in the British Imperial Crown. The Ceylonese sapphires are also randomly featured in the Crowns which are there in the Green Vaults of Dresden. Many more precious and beautiful gems await discovery in this charming island country and it is expected that the jewel trove of Sri Lanka will gift the world of gemstones with many more wonders in the years to come

The New Gem Varieties Discovered in Sri Lanka
Discovery of a new gem mineral is a very rare event. For it implies that the specimens found are at least large enough to be cut as gemstones suitable for jewelry and usually that they are transparent and pleasingly colored. From the trade point of view the recovery of a new gem variety of an already known mineral may be much important.

"Crystals of Heritage: How Dr. Palitha Gunasekara Unveiled the Rare Serendibite"
In the heart of Ratnapura, Sri Lanka’s famed “City of Gems,” Dr. Dunil Palitha Gunasekara has etched his name in gemological history through groundbreaking discoveries, deep expertise, and an unrelenting passion for gemstones. Known as one of Sri Lanka’s leading gemologists and a gemstone dealer with over two decades in the industry, Dr. Palitha is celebrated not only for his profound scientific insights but also for reigniting global interest in one of the world’s rarest gems—Serendibite.

A Journey in Gemology and Trading Excellence

Armed with diplomas in gemology from Sri Lanka and Great Britain, Dr. Palitha channels his expertise into his business, **Crystals Gallery**, a distinguished gem laboratory and boutique located in Ratnapura. As a hub for discerning buyers, his gallery offers certified gems, professional analysis, and insights, making it a trusted name among both local and international gem enthusiasts. His dual role as both gemologist and dealer underscores his practical understanding of the gemstone market and his unique position in the industry.

The 1996 Serendibite Discovery
The year 1996 marked a pivotal moment in Dr. Palitha’s career when he stumbled upon a seemingly ordinary green pebble from Kolonne. Its color and appearance initially suggested it could be Alexandrite or Konerupine, yet Dr. Palitha’s testing revealed unexpected findings. When examined through his refractometer, the stone produced three distinct refractive index (RI) readings: 1.697, 1.700, and 1.702—values he hadn’t encountered before.

His meticulous investigation led to a groundbreaking conclusion: the stone was a rare Serendibite, a gem first discovered in Sri Lanka in 1902. Sending the stone to Dr. Mary L. Johnson at the **Gemological Institute of America (GIA)** in California, Dr. Palitha received official confirmation through **Report No. 10035658** in early 1997. This identification was not only a personal triumph but also a significant moment in gemological history, as it marked the first identification of Serendibite since its initial discovery.

Serendibite’s Place in History
Dr. Palitha’s find added new luster to the gemological world’s understanding of Serendibite, with his green, 1.25-carat discovery holding historical significance. Before 2005, only three faceted Serendibite stones existed, all from the original Sri Lankan find. His second discovery of another green Serendibite of 0.80 carats further highlighted his role as a pioneering gemologist. Both gems were later acquired by the eminent gemologist **Dr. Edward J. Gübelin** in 1999, elevating their significance and adding to Dr. Palitha’s international acclaim.

Beyond the Science: Honoring Family Legacy
Beyond the scientific recognition, Dr. Palitha’s initial wish to name the gem “Bonnynite,” in honor of his mother, Bonnyn, reflects a deeply personal connection to his work. This gesture embodies the rich cultural ties that Sri Lankans share with their gemstones—a bond forged by family, heritage, and tradition.

Advancing Gemological Understanding

Dr. Palitha’s rediscovery of Serendibite was instrumental in renewing interest in the stone, which is prized for its vivid spectrum from greenish-blue to violet-blue and, occasionally, black. Through his work, he brought global attention back to Sri Lanka, one of the world’s foremost gem-producing nations, and highlighted the nation’s unique contribution to gemology.

A Lasting Influence on the Gemstone Industry

Dr. Palitha’s dedication to gemology is underscored by his rigorous testing practices, keen attention to refractive indices, and his ability to recognize potential in stones that others may overlook. Through his work, Sri Lanka’s gemological heritage continues to shine brightly on the global stage, reminding us of the beauty, rarity, and historical significance of its precious stones.

Religious Beliefs and Astrological Rituals in Sri Lanka Gem Mining
In Sri Lanka, gem mining is not just an economic activity but a deeply spiritual and cultural practice, steeped in religious beliefs and astrological rituals.
The religious and astrological rituals embedded in Sri Lanka's gem mining practices reflect a profound cultural tradition where the sacred and the material are intertwined. Miners believe that their success depends not only on physical labor but also on their relationship with the divine, astrological forces, and the natural world. By honoring these rituals, they hope to ensure the safety, prosperity, and blessings of the gods as they delve into the earth in search of precious gems.
For centuries, miners have turned to spiritual practices to guide their efforts, as they believe that divine intervention and favorable astrological conditions can significantly influence the outcome of their ventures.

Explore the timeless "City of Gems Ratnapura"

Nestled in the southwestern region of Sri Lanka, Ratnapura has earned its title as the “City of Gems,” a name that resonates globally due to its rich heritage and vast deposits of precious gemstones. This city, with a gem mining history dating back over 2,500 years, stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s long-standing reputation as a premier source of rare and exquisite gems.

Historical Legacy and Early Gem Trade
Ratnapura's gem trade is well-documented in ancient chronicles, inscriptions, and folklore. Historically, gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, garnets, and many others were highly valued by Sri Lankan royalty and became coveted treasures traded with kingdoms and empires beyond the island’s shores. Even in ancient times, Sri Lanka’s gemstones were famed for their superior quality, attracting traders from as far as the Middle East and Asia.
Colonial Era and Modern Mining Practices
The colonial era, spanning from the 16th to the 20th centuries, brought new dynamics to the Sri Lankan gem trade. European powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, recognized the immense value of Sri Lanka’s gemstone resources. Under British rule, particularly in the 19th century, formal regulations were introduced, transforming the gem mining industry. Modern techniques and organized mining operations were established, laying the foundation for more systematic and commercial mining practices.
Ceylon Sapphires and Other Gem Treasures
Ratnapura is most famous for producing the world-renowned Ceylon sapphires, particularly the highly prized blue sapphires, which are celebrated for their unique color, brilliance, and clarity. These sapphires are often regarded as the benchmark for gemstone quality, making them a favorite among royalty and collectors worldwide.
In addition to sapphires, Ratnapura is home to star rubies, which exhibit the fascinating phenomenon of asterism—when expertly cut and polished, these rubies reveal a star-like pattern that enhances their rarity and value. The region also yields a diverse range of other gemstones, including topaz, amethyst, aquamarine, tourmaline, and zircon, each adding to the city's reputation as a global gem hub.
Traditional and Modern Mining Techniques
Gem mining in Ratnapura continues to be deeply rooted in tradition. Most mining operations are still conducted manually, with miners digging deep pits or using basic tools to reach gem-bearing gravel layers. This artisanal approach, passed down through generations, is complemented by more modern techniques such as riverbed mining, where gem-bearing gravels are extracted from riverbeds using methods like panning and sluicing. These techniques help separate gemstones from sediment, ensuring a steady supply of rough gems to meet global demand.
The Gem Trade Hub
Ratnapura remains the heartbeat of Sri Lanka’s gem trade. The city’s bustling gem markets and cutting centers are where rough stones are sorted, cut, and polished to perfection. Families, many of whom have been involved in the industry for generations, are engaged in various aspects of the gem trade—from mining and trading to cutting, polishing, and jewelry manufacturing. The gemstone industry serves as a vital economic lifeline for the local population, providing livelihoods and preserving the region’s gem-related craftsmanship.
Cultural and Religious Significance
Beyond its economic importance, gemstones hold deep cultural and religious significance in Sri Lanka. Gemstones are often used in traditional jewelry and religious artifacts, reflecting their revered status in Sri Lankan society. The allure of these gems extends far beyond their beauty, symbolizing prosperity, protection, and spiritual power in the country’s rich cultural fabric.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Ratnapura’s gemstone industry plays a significant role in the national economy, attracting international buyers and gem enthusiasts to its markets, while contributing to Sri Lanka’s export revenues. However, the city faces environmental challenges due to mining activities. Habitat disturbance and sedimentation in rivers pose ongoing concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable practices to protect Ratnapura’s natural beauty.
A Legacy of Timeless Beauty
The story of Ratnapura is one of ancient traditions, colonial influences, and modern developments, all interwoven to form an enduring legacy. As the world continues to seek out Sri Lanka’s exquisite gemstones, Ratnapura remains at the center of this journey, captivating gem lovers and cultural explorers alike. The city’s vibrant gem trade and rich history ensure that its reputation as the "City of Gems" will continue to shine brightly for generations to come.
