So why do we hear the expression “It’s not in my job description” quite often?⁣

Three primary factors…⁣

(1)The obvious...a poorly defined job description, or too vague that allows for misconstrual of responsibilities and accountabilities⁣
(2) Lack of enforcement on accountabilities by a manager / supervisor⁣

(3)Job role evolves and adapts, but it is not effectively communicated and filtered down⁣

All are easily remedied but the primary factor must be understood and the appropriate action taken to resolve it. Else leaving it as is, causes a direct negative impact on motivation and engagement with the staff member / team and this can act like a virus in which negative energy flows through the company.⁣

As a manager, if you hear this phrase, take it seriously and respect the person that is saying, and question to understand why and address it then and there.⁣

As an employee if you say this phrase, ask to speak to your manager or supervisor and explain why you feel a specific task or accountability is not in the remit of your role, and it will then be either acknowledged or your role adapted.⁣

Punctuality, integrity and respect are all intertwined. ⁣

Poor time management is generally sign of a serious lack of efficiency and procrastination. But can be easily remedied. We will soon be posting a number of bite size videos in a series in which you can learn some basic tips on how to improve your efficiency amongst many other aspects of your professional life. ⁣

We are in an age where anyone can become a director of a company, immediately pride and ego kicks in as one looks at their business card and sees ‘Director’ or ‘CEO’. A title like anything else is just a label. As most things in this world, substance comes from what is within. What is within is often displayed through tell tale signs on the outward.

Here are some simple traits to help you determine them. If you are currently a ‘Boss’ don't worry, acknowledge it, and make the necessary changes and develop yourself to become that leader you want to be. Practicing these qualities will naturally develop your personal skills, your team and your business.

We have all had a colleague and coworker that finds it easier to put others down than raising their game. This is a classic case of an individual that has low self confidence.⁣

When you are confident within yourself, and can openly say “hey, I made a mistake, or sorry I am not so great at that particular skill” you show ⁣
(a) humility ⁣
(b) a willingness to address your areas of weakness and make an effort to strengthen those areas.⁣

When you encounter someone with a lack of confidence usually two responses occur.⁣
(1)Ignore them⁣
(2)Counter attack⁣

We suggest a third...Praise them! By throwing niceties back at someone, it naturally lowers their defences and brings out their more compassionate side. They will then naturally be charmed by your humility and confidence, and in turn it will help them grow too as they begin to emulate you.⁣

There are often times when a member of a company excels in their specific department or discipline, and they are swiftly promoted with intentions for them to lead others in that team to emulate their success.

However, being excellent at say Sales, or Project Management does not necessarily mean they possess the skills to manage, inspire, motivate and mentor a team. These skills need to be nurtured and honed.

Hence it is always recommended for new manager responsible for teams to undertake a form of management training to understand the importance of recognition and engagement within a team.

The label of a leader is one that is earned and one that needs to be continually earned. It is not a single achievement. It is an ongoing task, one that often receives little thanks or praise, but the reward is there each and every day for a true leader; as they take immense satisfaction from achieving results and nurturing and inspiring teams to push for more.

We have all been there, waiting for 6 months to a year, and then a 30 minute to 1 hour meeting listening to your manager say how good you are, and how valued you are…...BUT ...for x reason this and x reason that they FEEL etc etc.

Companies that incorporate 360 degree feedback have shown significant improvements in morale and enthusiasm, as employees are more confident that their skills will shine, and any areas of weakness will be objectively highlighted and therefore can be isolated and a clear action plan can be designed, be it one to one coaching, e-learning or attending a specific workshop.
