Helping women-led business to grow
Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, Ceylon Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs (CCWE) President Dr. Ayanthi Gurusinghe noted that Sri Lanka had certainly made progress in recognising women entrepreneurs as an important banking segment, but added that equal access to a bank account or the availability of a ‘women’s loan product’ did not necessarily mean equal access to finance in practice.
“We should also distinguish between the interest rate advertised for a loan and the actual ability of a woman entrepreneur to qualify for that loan. Recent CCWE research on WMSMEs in Sri Lanka found that women entrepreneurs continue to face structural barriers including stricter collateral requirements, rigid loan structures, guarantor requirements, and perceptions that women are higher-risk borrowers.
