The Knowledge Boxes

In April 2025, five wooden “Knowledge Boxes” were carefully placed on the seabed at a depth of 33 meters, in close proximity to the Godawaya Shipwreck. The aim of this experiment is to observe and record changes over time under natural underwater conditions.
All five boxes were made from the same type of wood, but each was treated differently: Wax , Commercial wood preservative, Tar (bitumen), Coconut oil, and one left untreated
Each box also contains pieces of copper and iron, allowing us to monitor how both organic and metal materials respond in a submerged marine environment. A key question behind this experiment is: how has the Godawaya shipwreck site remained preserved for nearly 2,200 years?
Why do some original wooden elements still survive without clear evidence of wood-boring organisms? Is it due to protective treatments, environmental conditions, or the presence of copper and iron across the site?
These “Knowledge Boxes” are designed to help us explore these questions. The findings will contribute valuable insights into material preservation, deterioration processes, and the long-term behaviour of different treatments underwater.

වසර දෙදහසකට වඩා පැරණි ගොඩවාය යත්රාවේ දැවකොටස් මෙපමණ කලක් ආරක්ෂිතව පවතින්නේ කෙසේද යන ගැටළුවට පිළිතුරු සොයා ගැණිම සඳහා මෙම කුඩා ලී පෙට්ටි ගොඩවාය මුහුදු පත්ලේ පැරණි යාත්රාව ආසන්නයේ තැන්පත්කර ඇත.
මේ එක් එක් මඤ්ජුසාවට පිළිවෙලින් දැව ආරක්ෂක, තාර, ඉටි සහ පොල්තෙල් ආලේප කර ඇත. එකක් කිසිවක් ආලේප නොකර තබා ඇත. පෙට්ටි ඇතුලත තඹ සහ යකඩ කැබලි දමා වසා ඇත. 2025 අප්රේල් මස තැන්පත් කල මෙම නිදර්ශක තවත් කාලාන්තරයක් අපගේ දැනුමේ හිඩැස් පුරවමින් තොරතුරු ලබදෙනු ඇතැයි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙමු.
