Sri Lanka’s total exports exceeded the US$9 billion milestone in the first half of 2026, with steady growth recorded in both merchandise and services exports, according to the Export Development Board (EDB).

Total merchandise and services exports were estimated at US$ 9,012.24 Mn from January to June 2026, marking an 8% increase compared to the corresponding period last year.

Merchandise exports increased by 8.95% year-on-year to US$ 7,073.31 Mn, while services exports rose 4.49% to US$ 1,938.94 Mn, highlighting continued expansion in Sri Lanka’s external sector.

In June, merchandise exports grew 15.09% year-on-year to US$ 1,314.10 Mn, while services exports rose 3.75% to US$ 344.52 million. This lifted total exports for the month to US$ 1,658.62 Mn, representing a 12.53% increase compared to June 2025.

EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe said the export performance reflected the resilience and competitiveness of Sri Lankan exporters despite changing global market conditions.

Strong growth in June was recorded in electrical and electronic components, food and beverages, rubber-based products, spices and essential oils, seafood, mineral products, ornamental fish, and ICT/BPM services.

Meanwhile, exports of apparel and textiles, tea, and coconut-based products declined during the month.

Over the first six months of 2026, electrical and electronic components, coconut-based products, rubber-based products, processed food and beverages, seafood, and ICT/BPM services posted notable growth. In contrast, apparel and textiles, tea, and spices and essential oils recorded declines.

Among Sri Lanka’s key export markets, India, China, Turkey, Japan, and Mexico registered positive growth in both June and the January–June period. India surpassed the United Kingdom to become Sri Lanka’s second-largest export market, while exports to the United States remained broadly stable during the first half of the year.

In an effort to commercialise the Trincomalee Oil Tank Farm, Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd (TPTL) is preparing to launch an international bidding process to develop 29 tanks out of the 61 tanks under its control.

A joint venture company, Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd (TPTL), was established in 2021, with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation holding a 51 per cent stake and Lanka IOC, a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation, holding 49 per cent. The agreement involves the joint development of 61 tanks out of the total 99 tanks. During Indian Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka last year, a tripartite agreement was signed between India, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to develop a multipurpose pipeline linking the two countries to enable two-way energy supplies.

Following the West Asian or Middle East crisis, Sri Lanka and India have acknowledged the importance of accelerating the implementation of the Trincomalee petroleum hub project to strengthen energy security. However, no specific timeline has been set for the project so far.

An informed source stated that the company is expected to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) within a month for the development of these tanks. The Cabinet Appointed Negotiation Committee (CANC) has given approval to invite bids from investors for the project. After the company completes the evaluation process, the proposal will be submitted back to the CANC for the final decision.

Trincomalee has been recognised as a key centre of cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in the area of energy security. The 1987 Indo–Sri Lanka Accord was the first formal agreement that referred to Indian involvement in the development of the Trincomalee oil tank farm.

Subsequently, during the 2002–2004 period, India and Sri Lanka entered into agreements that enabled IOC’s participation in fuel sales and distribution activities in Sri Lanka.

In recent discussions, Sri Lanka has also highlighted the importance of developing these tanks to ensure their full utilisation.

Sri Lanka’s fastest sprinter, Yupun Abeykoon, has officially announced his retirement from athletics, stating that he leaves the sport “owing nothing to my country, but indebted to the world.”

In a heartfelt message, Abeykoon expressed his gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Athletics, his training team in Italy, his sponsors, and the millions of Sri Lankans who stood by him throughout his career.

He described representing Sri Lanka on the international stage and bringing recognition to the nation as the greatest privilege of his life. However, he also shared his disappointment at having to retire despite still feeling capable of competing at the highest level.

Abeykoon added that he plans to explain the reasons behind his retirement and discuss his experiences with the current state of Sri Lankan athletics in the next chapter of his journey.

The Government of the People's Republic of China will provide, as a grant, the school uniform fabric required for all students and student monks studying in government schools, government-assisted schools, and government-approved Pirivenas across Sri Lanka for the 2027 academic year.

The official exchange of agreements relating to the donation took place on July 15 at the Ministry of Education in Isurupaya, Battaramulla.

Under the programme, the donation will meet the full school uniform fabric requirement for nearly 4.18 million students nationwide. China is expected to supply approximately 10.82 million metres of fabric free of charge.

The agreement was formally exchanged between Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong and Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training Nalaka Kaluwewa, reaffirming the longstanding partnership between the two countries.

The event was also attended by officials from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and senior representatives of the Ministry of Education.

A 17-year-old Sri Lankan American student **Sadali Costa** has made history as the first Sri Lankan American female to earn the prestigious **Eagle Scout** rank, the highest distinction awarded by Scouts America.

Her achievement marks a significant milestone for the Sri Lankan American community, placing her among the select group of young people who have attained Scouting America's highest honour.

An incoming senior at **Stow-Munroe Falls High School**, Costa earned the Eagle Scout rank in late 2025, joining more than 2.5 million youth who have received the organisation's top recognition.

According to Patrick Scherer, CEO of Stow's Great Trail Council, Costa is the first Sri Lankan American girl known to Scouting America to achieve this distinction.

She was also among 169 Scouts from Medina, Summit, Portage, Trumbull, and Mahoning counties who earned the Eagle Scout rank in 2025, Scherer said.

Sri Lanka’s fiscal position continued to improve during the first five months of 2026, with the Government recording an overall Budget surplus of Rs. 197.34 billion, compared to a deficit of Rs. 236.63 billion in the same period last year, as revenue growth continued to outpace expenditure.

The latest fiscal operations data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) showed that total revenue and grants increased by 30.6% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs. 2.54 trillion during the January-May period, up from Rs. 1.94 trillion recorded a year earlier.

Tax revenue, which remained the largest source of Government income, rose by 23.9% to Rs. 2.32 trillion from Rs. 1.8 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025. Non-tax revenue posted a stronger increase of 54.2%, reaching Rs. 211.84 billion compared to Rs. 137.38 billion a year earlier. Meanwhile, grants declined to Rs. 1.34 billion from Rs. 2.49 billion.

Total expenditure and lending minus repayments increased by 7.3% YoY to Rs. 2.34 trillion from Rs. 2.18 trillion, indicating that expenditure remained under control despite higher capital spending.

Recurrent expenditure increased by 5.5% to Rs. 2.11 trillion, while capital expenditure and lending minus repayments rose by 29.3% to Rs. 226.83 billion from Rs. 175.37 billion during the same period last year.

The primary balance, a key fiscal measure under Sri Lanka’s International Monetary Fund (IMF)-supported reform programme, improved to a surplus of Rs. 1.13 trillion during the first five months of the year, up from Rs. 742.92 billion in the corresponding period of 2025, marking a 52.3% increase.

The latest data highlights the continued strengthening of the country’s public finances, with improved revenue mobilisation allowing the Government to maintain substantial primary and overall Budget surpluses while also increasing capital expenditure during the period.

According to the IMF’s latest assessment, although fiscal policy is expected to ease temporarily in 2026, the Government remains committed to restoring the primary surplus target to 2.3% of GDP in 2027 to preserve macroeconomic stability.

The IMF said measures to improve tax compliance, broaden the tax base, and strengthen public financial management should continue. It also called for faster implementation of public expenditure, including funding for disaster-related assistance.

In addition, the IMF urged the Government to accelerate reforms of State-owned enterprises, maintain cost-reflective energy pricing, and further strengthen social safety nets to reduce fiscal risks.

The IMF also emphasised the importance of strengthening the Public Debt Management Office as debt restructuring approaches completion, noting that this will support prudent debt management, deepen the domestic debt market, and help facilitate Sri Lanka’s eventual return to international capital markets.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal for Sri Lanka to host the fourth Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Agriculture Ministers' Meeting and Senior Officials' Meeting on March 17 and 18, 2027.

BIMSTEC is a regional grouping comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, established to strengthen technical, economic, and sectoral cooperation among countries in the Bay of Bengal region.

Agriculture remains one of BIMSTEC's key areas of collaboration, reflecting its critical role in supporting the economies of member states, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing regional food security.

Held once every two years, the BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministers' Meeting brings together ministers and senior officials to discuss regional cooperation and policy priorities in the agriculture sector. Sri Lanka has been selected as the host nation for the fourth edition of the meeting.

The Cabinet approval was granted following a proposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation to organize the event in Sri Lanka in March 2027.
