As of now, obtaining a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is compulsory for individuals above 18 years, but Finance State Minister Ranjith Siambalapitiya stated that the Rs. 50,000 fine for non-compliance won't be enforced currently. While emphasizing the government's consideration for the country's future and revenue, he assured that there is no intention to pressure the public. Siambalapitiya clarified that having a TIN doesn't necessarily imply paying taxes, with only those earning a net income of Rs. 100,000 per month being obligated to pay income tax.
