Lanka Education And Research Network, National Research and Educational Network (NREN) of Sri Lanka

Lanka Education And Research Network is the NREN (National Research and Education Network) of Sri Lanka, which interconnects Educational and Research institutions across the country, and provide network related services to them. A National Research and Education Network (NREN) is usually a specialized Internet Service Provider dedicated to supporting the needs of the research and education communi

ties within a country and it is distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects. We currently interconnect all of the UGC funded state universities, a number of public universities under other ministries, the University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Higher Education, and a number of national research institutions including the National Science Foundation (NSF). Our network is an advanced network supporting IPv6 and multicast. It currently includes optical fiber links ranging from 500Mbps to 5Mbps to most campuses. At present our international connectivity include a 10Gbps bandwidth to the commodity Internet and a 5Gbps link to Singapore that connects the academic/research Internet through the TEIN4 network, SingAREN, Internet2 and Google. We also have direct connections to SchoolNet, the network connecting secondary schools and Local Government Network (LGN), the network connecting government institutions in Sri Lanka.

🚀 Bringing AI learning closer to students across Sri Lanka!

As part of the AI for All - AI Fundamentals Programme, LEARN took AI education beyond the screen - conducting engaging physical sessions for students at College of Technology Kurunegala, College of Technology Kandy, and SLIIT Kandy Uni. 📚🤖

“AI for All” is a completely free certificate programme designed to equip students with essential AI knowledge and practical skills. The programme is primarily conducted online, with selected physical sessions held in collaboration with participating institutes.

Students will have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of AI, AI tools for productivity, prompt engineering, responsible AI use, and more - while building the skills needed for an increasingly AI-driven future. 🚀

The programme is part of the AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific, implemented in collaboration with AVPN and supported by Google.org and the Asian Development Bank.

🌐 Cyber resilience is built before a crisis begins.

At APAN62 in Auckland, research and education network leaders from across the Asia-Pacific signed the Auckland Declaration of Intent on Cyber Resilience - a shared commitment to strengthen trust, preparedness, information sharing, incident coordination and mutual support across our regional community.

Research and education are deeply international. So when disruption happens, our response needs to be connected too.

Signed at the APAN/Asi@Connect Leaders Forum, the declaration brings together leaders from TEIN*CC/Asi@Connect, Asia Pacific Advanced Network and REANNZ Ltd., and recognises that resilience is not only about technology. It is also about the relationships, trust and cooperation that allow people to act quickly when it matters.

A proud moment for APAN in Auckland, and an important step for regional collaboration across the research and education network community.

🎓 Celebrating another milestone in building AI literacy across Sri Lanka!

LEARN, in collaboration with University of Peradeniya, proudly hosted the 3rd AI for All – AI Fundamentals Certificate Awarding Ceremony, recognizing participants who successfully completed the programme.

"AI for All" is a free, fully online, 5-week AI certificate programme designed for university undergraduates and TVET students in Sri Lanka. Through this initiative, over 5,000 learners have already gained essential AI knowledge and practical skills for their academic and professional journeys.

A major milestone for Sri Lanka's AI journey. 🇱🇰

On June 9th, we gathered at Hilton Residences for the official stakeholder meeting to formalise the National AI Institute - moving it from a concept first introduced at Sri Lanka's National AI Expo 2025, into a structured reality.

This initiative brings together SLTMobitel as the sponsor and host, alongside LEARN as the organiser, with strong alignment across the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Ministry of Education/Higher Education, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as 32 institutions under these ministries.

We were honoured to have Hon. Eng. Eranga Weeraratne (Deputy Minister of Digital Economy) as the chief guest, and Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya (Chairman, GovTech & Senior Advisor to the President) and Mr. M. Riyaaz Rasheed (CEO, SLT) as special guests.

The day also featured a rich panel discussion on the need, scope and implementation pathway for a coordinated National AI R&D Platform - one that can strengthen national AI R&D capacity, improve access to shared infrastructure, and bring ministries, universities, research institutions, industry and regulators together without duplicating existing mandates.

A New Chapter for LEARN: Celebrating Our New Office Opening! 🚀✨

We are thrilled to announce that LEARN has officially moved into our brand-new office space located at No. 167 Vihara Mawatha, Mulgampola, Kandy! 🏢

To mark this momentous milestone, our grand opening commenced with a beautiful blend of cultural and spiritual traditions, bringing our community together in unity and gratitude. The day began with a traditional milk-boiling ceremony to invite prosperity, followed by a sacred Pirith chanting and blessings led by a Pastor-setting a harmonious foundation for our future. 🕯️🙏

Our CTO Dr. Asitha Bandaranayake gracefully led the traditional ceremonies, which were followed by inspiring and valuable speeches from our Chairman, Snr. Prof. K L A Wasantha Kumara, CEO, Prof. Roshan Ragel and Operations Manager, Ms. Wathsala Lakmalie DaYananda mapping out our exciting vision for the future.

We were deeply honoured to celebrate this special day alongside our esteemed Board of Directors and key stakeholders.
